That New Attorney Smell
The first order of business at today’s Stafford County Board of Supervisors meeting: introducing the new county attorney. Charlie Shumate will replace current County Attorney Joe Howard. Shumate will begin his job on Oct. 25. Howard will retire Nov. 1
Shumate introduced himself to the board and public with some cursory pleasantries.
“This is a high honor you have accorded me,” he told the board. “I have every reason to believe there will be a smooth transition.”
Shumate is a private practitioner from Fairfax County with “extensive experience in land use and real estate development law,” according to a press release from the county.
He has a B.A. in history from VMI and a Juris Doctor Degree from the Washington College of Law of the American University. He was a Captain in the U.S. Army and earned a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam.
