The Rappahannock Regional Solid Waste Management Board voted to extend the weekend hours at the Eskimo Hill landfill in Stafford and the Belman Road Recycling Center in Fredericksburg. Starting tomorrow, both will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Since January, both facilities had closed at 2 p.m.

So R-Board hours are:

M-F: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Sat and Sun: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Check the press release for the official word.

How does this help? the road into the dump is backed up at 9:00, not 2:00. Open at 8:00 like the good ol’ days so people can go to the dump then get on with teh rest of their day.

The Regional Landfill is operated under an agreement between Stafford County and the City of Fredericksburg. It is totally self-supporting, meaning it is not subsidized by funds from either locality. To my knowledge, it is the only landfill in the State that is totally self-supporting. The economic downturn has greatly impacted the fees that the landfill collects from commercial haulers to the extent that operation in the red was imminent. The Landfill Board of Directors had several options to remedy this, all of which had negative consequences. The least painful was to limit the hours of operation on the weekend. Each hour of weekend operation requires a crew of at least 5 to be available. This adds up to tens of thousands of dollars per year. The Landfill Board recognizes the need to provide as much opportunity for residents to use the Landfill on weekends and will continue to monitor the situation as well as search for innovative ways to curtail costs.
