Lee Drive to be closed next week for repairs
Part of Lee Drive will be closed next Monday and Tuesday for repairs, said Russ Smith, superintendent of the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.
North Lee Drive, which stretches from Lansdowne Road to Lafayette Boulevard, will receive a new coat of gravel.
The National Park Service resurfaced the road in May with a layer of tar topped with pea gravel. But the gravel did not bond properly because traffic was allowed on the road too soon, according to a National Park Service press release.
So the Park Service asked its contractor to replace it with tar and a finer grade of gravel free of charge. Gravel that does not adhere to the tar after a few days will be swept from the road.
Many bicyclists opposed Lee Drive’s new rocky surface. They said the loose rocks make it unsafe for cyclists. The Park Service applied the gravel in an attempt to slow motorists and cyclists.
