County discouraging open burning after NWS bulletin
The National Weather Service issued today a “Special Weather Statement” for several counties in the region, including Spotsylvania, that there is an increased level of concern of fires due to the weather.
“While there are no special burning restrictions currently in place for the county, there is increased fire danger due to expected higher winds, dry conditions and lower humidity,” said county spokeswoman Kathy Smith, in a press release. ” Open burning is strongly discouraged at this time.”
Red Flag warnings exist in Culpeper, Fauquier and Prince William counties, which means the conditions can cause the spread of brush fires. ditions.
Spotsylvania Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management and Virginia Department of Forestry officials urge citizens to avoid open burning if possible through the remainder of the week. Citizens are further urged to double-check areas where open burning has recently taken place to avoid potential re-ignition in those areas.
