BUDGET QUICKY; Mary Lee Carter

I have a story for tomorrow, but I just wanted to write about the recommended budget.

County Administrator Randy Wheeler recommended keeping the tax rate at 62 cents. But the equalized tax rate is 56 cents. So, essentially, the budget contains a 6-cent tax increase as it is currently proposed. Assessments mailed out this week show an average 10.5 percent increase in property values. What that means is to offset that assessment increase, the tax rate would have to be 56 cents.

This week, I will be working on an assessment story. Anyone who wants to discuss their assessment with me, just call or email me.

Also, Mary Lee Carter was appointed to the Planning Commission. The appointment, requested by Supervisor Gary Skinner, was part of the 17-item consent agenda that the county board passed on a 7-0 vote. Mary Lee, if you read my blog, call me tomorrow please?

County services cost money. Keeping the crap out of the Massaponax Creek costs money. Having a decent school system costs money. Hopefully the BOS will understand this when they look at Wheeler’s budget. FYI, the Tax rate in Hanover is 81 cents.

There should be a huge outcry about these assessments. An “average” of 10.5 percent. My 3 BR, 2 BA 20 year old house went up 21% in value from 2006 according to these “assessors.” I’ve been trying to sell my house since June. I can’t sell it even close to what they have my house assessed at. We will probably end up selling it below what my 2006 rate was. I plan on appealing it. But at this point, my taxes will go up twice what the “average” person’s is.

In the last election, do you really think voters elected Vince Onorato because they LIKED him? It was a vote AGAINST Mary Lee Carter and the old regime. Too bad Mr. Skinner doesn’t understand this. By aligning himself with the old guard, his re-election in two years becomes questionable.

Now we can expect to see Routes 1, 2, and 17 re-zoned and commercialized beyond reason as Ms. Carter works to enhance Cosner, Silver, etc. during her 2-yr. reign.
