Over the course of her four-year career, the majority of Colonial Forge senior forward Sydney Arnold’s goals have been of the skill variety.

But Thursday night, down by a goal when the Eagles needed it most, it wasn’t Arnold’s talent, but instead her fight that would generate a much-needed rally.

Arnold raced downfield to catch up with a pass from Niomi Serrano, scraped and jostled for possession with a defender and scored to start a three-goal rally that lifted Colonial Forge to a 3–1 win over Osbourn Park in the first round of the Northwest Region playoffs.

“The girl has the school record, single season and career,” Eagles coach Bronson Gambale said, “and she’s never scored a goal like that.”

Colonial Forge (18–2) will travel to play Franklin County Monday in the regional quarterfinals.

The goal was Arnold’s 24th of the year and kickstarted what would be a rewarding end to a long two weeks for the Eagles.

Following a three-day stretch in which they won two Commonwealth District tournament games in three days, the Eagles suffered a major setback when starting center back Madison Lopez broke her ankle in warmups of the title game.

Colonial Forge went on to defeat Albemarle 2–0 and clinch the district and a date with the Yellow Jackets at home.

Some confusion on defense made for a slow start and allowed Osbourn Park to jump out a to a one-goal lead on a juicy rebound with 18:16 left in the first half.
Colonial Forge goalie Rachel Carr made a diving save on a shot from Erin Mitchell, but Osbourn Park’s Marissa Valenti came swooping in to put home the bouncing ball.

In desperate need of a goal and some momentum heading into the intermission, Arnold delivered the equalizer for the Eagles.

“I saw the ball slowly rolling in,” Arnold said. “I was like, ‘a goal’s a goal, it doesn’t have to be pretty.’”

Colonial Forge continued to apply pressure at the beginning of the second half, with shots by Arnold and Ali Heath sailing just over the net.

But with 24:24 left in regulation, Teresa Tripodi took a pass from Kailiegh Boitnott in front of the net and buried it for the go-ahead goal.

“Unbelievable momentum shift,” Gambale said.

With just under four minutes to play, Stephanie Hendrie made a dazzling move to break free in front of the net, but was robbed by Osbourn Park goalie Alexis Hodgson.

Colonial Forge’s relentless offensive pressure rolled on, even with the lead in hand, until senior Devon Burke scored an unassisted, game-clinching goal with 3:29 left.

“I think if we don’t get that goal,” said Gambale of Arnold’s game-tying goal in the first half, “we don’t know what the second half looks like.”

The Eagles held a 12–7 advantage in shots on goal, but the Yellow Jackets threatened late in the second half.

Carr was bombarded with multiple shots in the final 20 minutes, including one that ricocheted off the top of the crossbar.

“It was a little nerve-racking,” Carr said, with tape wrapped around her right wrist.

Carr has been playing with an avulsion fracture in her wrist, where the tendon has been pulled off the bone, for the past six weeks.

“You’re talking about a freak of nature,” Gambale said.

Carr, who recorded 10 saves in the district title game, made five critical saves in the second half that prevented Osbourn Park from scoring the tying goal.

The Eagles move on to face Franklin County, winners of the Western Valley District, in the regional quarterfinals with hopes of advancing to the semifinals, where they fell last season.

“We’re hungry. We don’t want to lose in the semifinals like last year,” Arnold said. “We want to go on to the states.”

Thursday’s Northwest Region first-found game against visiting Broad Run was the first ever for Riverbend in Group AAA.

With junior pitcher Anthony Burke leading the way once again, the Bears made sure that it was a successful one.
Burke scattered six hits and struck out five in six innings as Riverbend posted a 7–4 victory on a muggy night. He also made his presence felt at the plate with three hits and three RBIs to help his own cause.
The win advanced the Bears (15–9) to the Northwest Region quarterfinals at Hylton on Monday. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
“I feel like we’re getting into a groove as a team,” said Burke, who improved to 8–1 with Thursday’s victory. “The way we’ve been playing, I don’t see anybody beating us, unless we beat ourselves.”
“This was a really big win for us,” added rightfielderNate DiDonato, who drilled a pair of singles and scored two runs. “We’re going to try to stay on this ride and go as far as we can, hopefully to the states.”
If they continue to play the way they did against the Spartans (10–14) and get the strong pitching that Burke and their other ace, Eric Byrd, are capable of, they have a legitimate chance.
After squandering a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first when they got two hits, the Bears took charge in the second with a pair of runs.
DiDonato led off the inning with a single up the middle, stole second and then scored on a passed ball. Four batters later, Burke drove in Mike Pates with a single to make it 2–0.
The lead stood up until the top of the fourth, when Broad Run rallied to take its only lead of the game.
After cutting the margin to 2–1 on an RBI single by catcher Joe Delahaba in the third, the Spartans pulled in front 3–2 with just one hit and a throwing error by the Bears’ infield.
Michael Martinez and Evan Davis both reached base on infield hits and then scored when Riverbend third baseman Anthony Correa’s throw was wide at first on a grounder by Jonathan Truba.
The Bears did not waste any time responding to the challenge in the next two innings.
In the fourth, they plated three runs to regain the lead and their momentum. Burke delivered another clutch hit, driving in Bryce Runey and Luke Mello with a double to the left-field corner to spark the rally.
“The way [Burke] is playing doesn’t surprise me anymore—it’s almost expected,” said Riverbend coach Tim Stimmell. “He’s confident and his emotion doesn’t change. That’s one of his strengths.”
The Bears added two insurance runs in the fifth with a pair of hits, one an RBI- single by first baseman Chase Dolieslager. Dolieslager joined Burke and DiDonato as hitting standouts with a 2-for-2 night at the plate.
Meanwhile, Burke kept the Spartans off the scoreboard in his final two innings on the hill. Broad Run got its final run off Byrd in the top of the seventh on a two-out hit by AJ Powell.
Stimmell was pleased with the way his team rebounded from Monday’s one-sided loss to Colonial Forge in the Commonwealth District title game and took care of business against the Spartans. He also likes the Bears’ chances in the region quarterfinals.
“We had some of the hardest practices we’ve had all season the past two days and it paid off,” said Stimmell. “We’re going to do the same thing for Hylton and get ready to go get one on Monday.”

Culpeper and Eastern View baseball teams traded punches in the Battlefield District tournament title game.

Then, after more than three hours of competition and the scored tied 4–4, the marathon contest was over in a matter of minutes in the bottom of the 11th.
Eastern View designated hitter AJ Stead pushed a single past the Culpeper infield to lead off the frame, and then raced home with the winning run on an overthrow to first by Blue Devils third baseman Corey Slawson.
The hard-earned 5–4 victory was Eastern View’s third of the season over its county neighbor and earned the Cyclones (18–4) their second district tournament championship in five years. Last week they defeated the three-seeded Blue Devils twice to capture the regular-season title.
Both teams will continue their seasons in the Region I playoffs on Monday. Eastern View is the No. 1 seed in the region and will host a game on Monday against a team from the Southside District. Culpeper (13–5) will visit the loser of Thursday’s game be-tween New Kent and Warhill.
“This team has been playing on an even keel all season,” said Eastern View coach Daniel Nobbs. “It’s been great to see them stay on track from the success we had last year.”
Against the determined Blue Devils, it took a gutsy performance by pitchers Cain Finkle and Nemo Martinez, and some clutch hitting late in the game to keep them on the winning track.
Finkle engaged Blue Devils starter JP Gorby in a pitcher’s duel for seven innings. After both starters departed with the score knotted at 3–3, relievers Blaine Lafin of Culpeper and Nemo Martinez continued the hard throwing.
The Blue Devils appeared to have won their first championship in 22 years twice in the late innings, but on both occasions, Eastern View had the answer with two outs.
In the top of the sixth, the Blue Devils overcame a 2–1 deficit with a pair of runs off Finkle to take the lead. But the Cyclones sent the game into extra innings in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single by pinch hitter Stuart Paz.
In the eighth, Jermaine Butler walked and scored to put Culpeper on top again, but Stead’s RBI single with two outs plated pinch runner Jacob Settle to tie it again for Eastern View. Three innings later, Stead scored the winning run after reaching base on his second hit.
His slow grounder made it into the outfield to set the stage in the bottom of the 11th.
Nate Yates followed with a ground ball to third base that Slawson fielded cleanly. But the junior’s throw to first base was too high and Stead never broke stride on his way home with the decisive run.
Center-fielder Jordan Orndorff collected three of the Cyclones’ seven hits in the game. Butler had one of the Blue Devils’ three hits and also scored a pair of runs.

BY TOM LEISS / THE FREE LANCE-STAR

Courtland has been to the Battlefield District final on a regular basis over the years, and it reasserted its place at the top of the standings with a convincing 3–0 win over Spotsylvania in the Battlefield District championship game played at King George High School on Thursday.

If facing the talented Cougars wasn’t enough of an obstacle to overcome, the Knights lost Liz Balgoyen, their starting goalie, to an injury in pregame warm-ups. Backup Brittany Lord filled in well and helped keep the game close throughout.

Courtland took an early lead when Paige Robertson’s 16-yard shot took a deflection off a Spotsylvania defender before going into the net 7:13 into the game.

After the score, the Cougars started shooting wildly, trying to test Lord, which is something coach Dennis Berry and his staff talked to the team about at halftime.

“We had to work the ball around,” Berry said. “We talked about getting the ball inside the 18 and let’s get some [better] shots off, and let’s press.”

The adjustments worked and the Cougars started taking over control of the game.

It took nearly 18 minutes, but Marybeth McBroom doubled the Cougars’ lead, heading home a corner kick from Sydney Wallace to make the score 2–0.

McBroom added her second goal with under a second remaining, and credited Spotsylvania’s strong play with helping Courtland pick up its play as the game went on.

“They gave us motivation and they pushed us. So, when they pushed us, we pushed ourselves harder,” the forward said. “When we pushed ourselves harder, we really connected and just knew we had to get something done, and we finished it.”

Spotsylvania coach Len Carlson hopes his team will take this experience and run with it in the region tournament.

“I think they really fought hard,” he said. “Hopefully, we’ll really learn something from this and take it into our first round regional game on Tuesday.”

CHANCELLOR 2, KING GEORGE 1 (OT)

In the consolation game, Chancellor scored early and King George answered midway through the first half, but neither team could break the deadlock after the intermission forcing the game into to overtime.

Freshman Maddie Amos then netted her second goal of the game to put the Chargers ahead and the third-seed held on from there to get the victory and a trip to the region tournament.

Amos’ game-winner came after the Chargers controlled play in the second half, outshooting King George
13–2 in the frame, but couldn’t get anything by Foxes’ goalie Brie Bancroft (seven saves).

In the first five-minute period, Alyssa Cox found Amos open on the left side and the midfielder fired a shot past Bancroft with 23.6 seconds left in the frame.

“I just really wanted to help carry my team the best I could because we all wanted it so badly,” Amos said. “I wanted to do all I could to make it happen make the dream come true.”

Chancellor coach Jay Meyer had nothing but praise for his captain.

“She’s great. It’s the only time in the history of our program we’ve had a freshman as a captain and that’s the kind of kid she is,” he said. “She’s such a positive kid. She’s been awesome for us all year.”

Amos opened the scoring for Chancellor with a goal in the second minute of play, with an assist from Alex Berg. King George was able to level the match when Claire Larsen touched a ball to Jones, who finished from close range to make the score 1–1 in 18th minute.

After the Foxes bounced back from the early deficit and continued to fight throughout the whole game, King George head coach Denise Flatley had nothing but praise for her team.

“It didn’t affect us too much. We’ve grown accustomed to coming back,” Flatley said. “I think in years past we haven’t been able to do that, but our mentality has changed some. We try not to hang out heads. We try to go back out there and know that we can score.”

BY TAFT COGHILL JR. / THE FREE LANCE-STAR

When members of the King George girls track and field team learned one of their top athletes was injured playing soccer, their mood suddenly turned gloomy.

The Foxes were feeling good about themselves after running away with the Battlefield District championship last Wednesday, but without Lindsey Armentrout there was doubt about how they could compete for the Region I title.
“We were all upset,” junior standout Miranda Green said. “She’s a very valuable person to our team. It hurt us.”
But a pep talk from veteran coach Rudy Pekarek rejuvenated the Foxes. And while they fell just short of a regional championship Thursday at Culpeper, Pekarek said he left as proud as he’s ever been of a group.
King George finished with 77 points, which tied for second-place with Tabb, and was barely behind champion Brunswick (79 points).
Armentrout, who suffered an ankle injury in the district soccer tournament Tuesday, was slated to participate in five events. Pekarek said he expected her to score at least 24 out of a possible 50 points, but he was too upbeat about the performance of the rest of the team to lament her absence.
“This is the greatest girls team I’ve ever coached,” Pekarek said.
Pekarek felt that way because Green stepped up to win the 800 meters and the 1,600. She set a region meet record in the latter event (5:02.60).
Green also ran the anchor leg on the 1,600 relay team that placed fourth and qualified for the Group AA state meet.
The 1,600 relay was the final event, and if King George had finished two places higher, it would’ve won the regional title even without Armentrout.
“I told the girls, ‘We are like a battleship,’” Pekarek said. “We were missing one of the biggest guns on the ship, but we still had other parts.”
Pekarek wasn’t the only Battlefield coach who was pleased with his team’s effort. Caroline coach Sansberry Harvey, whose boys won the district championship last week, was satisfied with the Cavaliers’ third-place showing.
Caroline didn’t run its “A” team in the 400 or 1,600 relay, but still was able to finish with 77 points, close behind first-place Lafayette (94 points) and second-place Brunswick (86).
Harvey said the meet left him with the feeling that the Cavaliers have “an outside shot” at the school’s first state championship in any sport.
The Cavaliers were propelled by regional championship performances from DaQuan Pollard (long jump) and Aason Pankey (200 meters).
Pollard set a personal record in the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, 5 inches. He also placed second in the high jump, fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the 300 hurdles and seventh in the 110 hurdles.
Harvey said he didn’t allow Pankey and Pollard to compete in the relays because they were either injured (Pollard) or fatigued (Pankey) from playing basketball earlier in the week.
“Everybody wants to be like Mike,” Harvey said, “instead of focusing on what they should be focused on.”
Pankey finished fourth in the 100 meters, three spots behind James Monroe senior Glenn Taylor, who earned the regional title.
Taylor, who finished second to Pankey in the district meet, said he was motivated by the death of his grandmother on Wednesday in Jamaica. He went on to finish second in the 200.
“It’s a great feeling,” Taylor said. “I knew I messed up in districts, so I had to redeem myself in regionals.”
The JM boys also received a victory from Daniel Forjan in the shot put.
On the girls side, JM’s Ashlyn Marine captured the high jump with a meet record leap of 5 feet, 4 inches. Chancellor’s Steffene Cheeks reached the same mark but finished second.
King George’s Jonathan Graham established a new regional record in the pole vault when he cleared 13 feet, 4 inches. Culpeper’s Matt Chavers earned a regional title in the discus.
The Group AA state meet is next Friday and Saturday at Harrisonburg High School.

BY BETSY CARTER / THE FREE LANCE-STAR

THE BATTLEFIELD Horse Shows Association has grown to include membership at most shows in Virginia whose points count toward BHSA year-end awards.
Riders and horses accumulate points from January through November. Some riders and horses have been showing almost every weekend since January, resulting in huge leads.
The advantage to those horses which have just started showing in March or April is that they are much more rested than those showing every weekend without a break. These horses can catch up if the heavily shown horses are forced to take a break. But horses and riders who begin showing in January and gain a huge lead, can usually afford to take a break during the hottest months of July and August.
In showing, as in a horse race, luck factors into outcomes. Will your horse remain sound? Will the judge like your horse? Will you or your horse have an off day?
Here’s a recap of local points races (as of May 21):

Working: Unbridled Time with Erin Grampp riding has 192 points after six shows. Following her is Triple Crown Romance with Emily Dunn with 130.50 points at six shows.
Adult Amateurs: Ziegfeld Follies leads the way with 290 points after 11 shows; owned by Sharon MacDonald, ridden by Stephanie Hayes. The current second-place horse is Crypt’s Maei Star, o/r Khilla Giacobone with 150 points after only 4 shows. Third, is T.C. Romance (124); Time Well Wasted and Semantics have 123 each.
Children’s is a big division with 27 contenders. Laudable leads with 192.50 points at nine shows; o/Lisa Hammershcmidt, r/Sarah Balenger.Just on her heels is She’s A Rock Star o/Kristen Hager, r/Faith Sterna w/ 135 points at eight shows.
Low division: Line Dancer shown by Lindsay Gray is leading with 98 points at four shows. Consider This has 69 points; D’Artagnon has 66 points at only two shows and Good Grief with 52 points at two shows.
Green Hunters: In just two shows, Bedtime Stories already has earned 66 points. Rider Sarah Lamb could easily catch leader Summer’s Promise, who has been to nine shows with up 147.50 points.
Maiden: The leader is Perseverance o/r Fallon Wright with 205 points after 10 shows followed by Foxlair Jive at four shows with 110 points. Fourth place is Pin Up with 64 points after only two shows.

CALENDAR
May 24–26: Va. Preliminary Three Day Event at Lexington.
May 25: Summerplace; Sunny’s Place; Sandstone.
May 26: Short Circuit
May 27: The Hunter Experience

May 30: Summerplace
May 31–June 2: Boumi Temple; Virginia Barrel Classic, VHC.
