MARY WASHINGTON ROUNDUP: Eagles give head coach her 250th win

Big efforts from Sam Partonen and Brianne Comden helped head coach Deena Applebury earn her 250th career victory as the University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team beat Capital Athletic Conference rival Frostburg State 89–60 Wednesday night at the Anderson Center.

Comden recorded a career-high 27 points while Partonen dished out 14 assists—her best as an Eagle—in the rout of the Bobcats.

Brieneke Matthes hit four 3-pointers in chipping in 14 points for the Eagles, who next host CAC opponent Marymount on Saturday.

Frostburg State (3–12, 1–8): Deara Parker 1, Elaina Hummel 13, Bria Jones 2, Simone Wise 24, Ronje James 18, Bobbie McDonald 2. Totals: 28 8–11 60.

UMW (11–6, 4–5): Aby Diop 6, Caitlin Ciniero 4, Aubrey Howland 6, Brianne Comden 27, Sam Partonen 14, Megan Green 2, Erin Drumheller 2, Claire Haeuptle 4, Caitie Geoghegan 2, Brieneke Matthes 14, Sarah Listenbee 8. Totals: 45 5–10 89.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Bradley Riester drained seven 3-pointers to post a career-high 31 points as the 12th-ranked Eagles had little difficulty defeating CAC rival Frostburg State 87–59 at the Anderson Center Wednesday night.

Riester also had three assists and three steals in UMW’s win, which wasn’t as easy as the final score might indicate.

Dajon Daniel contributed 20 points while Taylor Johnson added 18 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles, who next tangle with CAC rival Marymount on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Frostburg State (2–15, 1–8): Jabari Kamau 16, Torrell Goodman 2, Aaron Bellamy 3, Brian Briscoe 2, Kurt Gangler 11, Joshua Corbett 5, Tyler Campbell 10, Quinton Dodson 8, Terry Martin 2. Totals: 26 11–27 59.

UMW (15–2, 8–1): Dylan Farinet 2, Dom Morra 8, Bradley Riester 31, Dajon Daniel 20, Taylor Johnson 18, Marcellus Holley 3, Asa Scott 5. Totals: 41 18–25 87.
