HIGH SCHOOL FIELD HOCKEY PREVIEW CAPSULES

COMMONWEALTH DISTRICT 

 

BROOKE POINT

Coach: Libby Baker

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 13–7 overall, 11–5 in district

Top returners: Sr. F Liz Washington, Sr. D Rachael Payne, So. D Taylor Hayes.

Top newcomers: So. D Caroline Wilkerson, Jr. A Chaselyn Trentley, So. GK Sierra Smizer.

Outlook: The Black–Haws graduated nine seniors and will be a bit younger this season. But Washington was an all-district pick and Payne was also solid, giving Brooke two leaders to build around.

 

COLONIAL FORGE

Coach: Julie Spinelli

Conference: Conf. 4, 6A–South

Last year: 14–5 overall, 12–4 in district

Top returners: Jr. MF Nikki Simpao, Sr. MF Kate Roberts, Sr. D Brittaney Nealis, So. MF Payton Staylor, Sr. F Amy Dziekowicz.

Top newcomers: Jr. MF Emily Flanagan, So. F Izzy Burke, Jr. MF Nicole Mares, Sr. MF Kylie Mulgrew.

Outlook: Several key players return from a team that has slowly improved over the last few seasons. The Eagles should be very competitive in the district and Conference 4.

 

MASSAPONAX

Coach: Lindsey Heppner

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 6–11 overall, 6–10 in district

Top returners: Sr. MF Kelly McNult, Sr. MF Erin Kaila.

Top newcomers: Fr. F/MF Maddie McNult, Fr. MF/D Kaeleen Johnson.

Outlook: Two all-district seniors return to lead a talented group of newcomers. Heppner thinks the Panthers can push the top of Conference 15.

 

MOUNTAIN VIEW

Coach: Pattie Sullivan

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 22–2 overall, 16–0 in district

Top returners: Sr. MF Bailey McCarthy, Sr. MF Morgan Lowry, Sr. D Beth Barnes, Jr. F Gretchen Geisler, Jr. MF Olivia Hubert.

Top newcomers: So. MF Lauren Graves, Fr. F Lilly Bryngelson.

Outlook: One of the best group of returners in the area should mean a strong season for the Wildcats, who are in pursuit of the school’s first state championship.

 

NORTH STAFFORD

Coach: Laura Cwick

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North 

Top returners: Sr. MF Sam Barbarczuk, Sr. MF Amanda Turner, Sr. GK Tabria Cochran.

Top newcomers: So. D Veronica Andrews, Jr. D Emily Murray, Jr. MF Alexandra Trimarchi, So. A Jordyn Estep.

Outlook: The Wolverines have come out focused and ready to play, Cwick said. The coach things a strong core of seniors will lead the team in the right direction.

 

RIVERBEND

Coach: Nicole Hollibaugh

Conference: Conf. 4, 6A–South

Last year: 6–11 overall, 6–10 district.

Top returners: Sr. F Haley McMahon, Jr. F Avery Warner, Jr. D Amelia White, Sr. D Hayley Dodson, Sr. M Haley Kilgore.

Top newcomers: So. D Meredith Bush, Fr. F Morgan Becker.

Outlook: Hollibaugh has moved the Bears over to a more attacking style of play and thinks the team will respond will more goals. The Bears graduated a lot from last year’s squad, but the young players have stepped up so far and have the first-year coach excited about how they will do.

 

STAFFORD

Coach: Dani Warters

Conference: Conf. 4, 6A–South

Last year: 18–6 overall, 12–4 in district

Top returners: Sr. D Natalie Bohmke, Sr. MF/D Morgan French, Sr. F Katie Deuell, Sr. F Elizabeth Brownell, Sr. D Felicia Tortorici, Sr. G Kelsey Trainor, Jr. F Kenly Belman, Jr. MF Brooke Harmon, So. D Lydia Bullock, So. F Gail Podlesny, So. MF Taylor Hoppe.

Top newcomers: Fr. F Callie Quinn, Fr. F Leah Constantine, Fr. MF Emily Kresho.

Outlook: The new classifications will present a challenge for Stafford—seven of the last 10 state champions have come from what is now the 6A–South. The Indians should be competitive as always, though. Bohmke was last year’s FLS player of the year.

 

 

BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT

 

CAROLINE

Coach: Greg Trainum

Conference: Conf. 20, 4A–South

Top returners: Sr. MF Candice Roberts, Sr. F Hodan Seager, Sr. GK Chelsey Chinault, So. MF Cassandra Cooper.

Top newcomers: Fr. MF Sydnei Robinson, So. MF Summer Simulcik.

Outlook: The Cavaliers bring hope and optimism to a new season, with plans to improve their scoring skills and team defense.

 

 

CHANCELLOR

Coach: Jim Larkin

Conference: Conf. 22, 4A–South

Last year: 20–4 overall, 14–0 in district, Group AA/A state champions

Top returners: Sr. Katherine Hull, Sr. Chloe Fernandez, Sr. Chelsea Galera, Sr. Kate Colley, So. Jordan Rasure, Sr. Kenzie Neylon.

Top newcomers: Jr. Tori Bailey.

Outlook: Ten starters return for the defending state champions. The only vacancy was in goal, where Bailey has stepped into rave reviews so far. The Chargers are primed for another run to the state final four.

 

 

COURTLAND

Coach: Laura Gast

Conference: Conf. 22, 4A–South

Last year: 11–8 overall, 9–5 in district

Top returners: Sr. MF Noelle Harrison, Sr. MF Sydney Rampey, Jr. GK Claire King, Sr. F Marybeth McBroom.

Top newcomers: So. F Katelyn Skinner, Jr. MF Allison Mitchell, Jr. D Julianna Graham, Fr. MF Annmarie Hoppel, Fr. MF Cameryn McLaurine.

Outlook: The Cougars graduated 10 players from last year’s team—they’ll be breaking in a lot of new faces this year.

 

 

JAMES MONROE

Coach: Jamie Tierney

Conference: Conf. 23, 4A–South

Last year: 16–3 overall, 12–2 district

Top returners: Hannah Fisher, Erin Cunningham, Katherine Ann McGinniss, Emma Miller Richards, Miranda Rigg, LC King.

Top newcomers: Rebecca Hamlett, Libby King, Wally Baker.

Outlook: Tierney doesn’t know what to expect out of the new conference alignment, but expects the team to work hard in a effort to return to the playoffs once again. The Yellow Jackets captured the district tournament crowd last year.

 

KING GEORGE

Coach: Debra Garcia

Conference: Conf. 22, 4A–South

Last year: 10–7 overall, 9–5 in district

Top returners: Sr. Meghan Yanchulis, Sr. Maure Buckley, Sr. Lucy Shippee, Sr. Jackie Collins, Jr. Shelby King, Jr. Liz Hill, So. Alexis Sheehan.

Top newcomers: Jr. Carly LIndstrom, Jr. Brittany Halsey, So. Cailey Doyle.

Outlook: Last year’s team was the first to post a winning record in over a decade and the first to qualify for the region tournament. But eight seniors graduated from that bunch. There is talent remaining to build around for first-year coach Garcia.

 

SPOTSYLVANIA

Coach: Kristi Rice

Conference: Conf. 23, 4A–South

Top returners: Sr. MF Mary Wolfrey, Sr. MF Logan Wolfe, Sr. F Gianna Castellino, Sr. GK Amber Cox, Sr. F Holli Chenault, Jr. D Kali Lynch.

Top newcomers: Jr. GK Haley Smith, Jr. D Kirsten Haynes, Jr. D/MF Kendra Johnson, Jr. MF Samantha Judy, Jr. MF Emily Dove.

Outlook: Rice returns to her alma mater as head coach. She thinks the Knights have a good group of returners—led by Wolfe and Wolfrey—to blend with a talented group of newcomers.

 

 

 

OTHER SCHOOLS

 

CULPEPER

Coach: Cathy Uribe

Conference: Conf. 23, 4A–South

Last year: 4–11 overall, 3–11 Battlefield District

Top returners: Sr. F Sydney Angel, Sr. F Kayla Bowers, Sr. M Colby Mocarski

Top newcomers: Jr. M Olivia Decatur, So. M/F Sarah Reed, So. D Ryan Malloy.

Outlook: The Cyclones have moved to the Evergreen District and look forward to what the new district will bring.

 

EASTERN VIEW

Coach: Peggy Allen

Conference: Conf. 22, 4A–South

Last year: 8–8 overall, 6–8 Battlefield District

Top returners: Sr. F Sarah Brown, Jr. M Carlynn Walker, So. HB Jordan Howard, Sr. GK Alexis Knipfer.

Outlook: The team has a few players back that Allen will be looking to to step up and lead the way against its Evergreen District and conference opponents. So far, the team’s been working hard and starting to mesh.

 

FREDERICKSBURG ACADEMY

Coach: Karen Moschetto

Conference: Delaney Athletic Conference

Last year: 18–1 overall, 8–0 in conference

Top returners: Sr. MF Meghan Norair, Sr. MF Allegra Massey Elim, So. MF Colleen Norair, So. D Carolyn Topps.

Top newcomers: G Kelsey Gedin, D Maya Schattgen, D Maddie Albertson, F Cate Hazel.

Outlook: After last year’s run to the Division 2 state championship, the Falcons graduated seven seniors. Still—there’s a good nucleus to build around, led by Meghan Norair, an All-Area pick last year.

 

 

FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN

Coach: Sarah Rutledge

Conference: Delaney Athletic Conference

Last year: 4–7 overall.

Top returners: Sarah Goodnough, Morgan Nebel, Abigail Manry, Abigail Smalley, Robyn Bill, Celestia Lorei, Bridgette RRoot.

Top newcomers: Carter Garrison, Alexis Love, Jamie Oh.

Outlook: Lorei is the top returning scorer for the Eagles and Root earned all-state honorable mention recognition for her play in goal.

 

 

LOUISA

Coach: Meredith Marconi

Conference: Conf. 23, 4A–North

Last year: 4–13 overall

 

ORANGE

Coach: Stephen Grabeel

Conference: Conf. 16, 5A–North

Top returners: Sr. MF Alana Foster, Sr. F/MF Ana Reuss, Sr. F Anna Bosworth, Sr. GK Kayla Lawson.

Top newcomers: Jr. Gena Shifflett.

Outlook: Orange returns to regular-season play against the Jefferson District, facing teams the Hornets have traditionally had success against.
