MASSAPONAX

Coach: Joe Cox

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 15–12 overall, 8–8 in district

Top newcomers: Jr. OH Indiana Wright, Jr. S Makayla Guentner, So. OH Kayla Bowler, Fr. MB Emma Swope.

Outlook: The Panthers lost six district matches last year in the deciding fifth set. They’ve got a great group of returners to improve that this year. Jankovits is closing on the school’s all-time kill record, and Beaver is already Massaponax’s career blocks leader with 250.

MOUNTAIN VIEW

Coach: Stacey Marsh

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 6–15 overall, 6–10 in district

Top returners: Sr. OH Sarah Weisband, Jr. S Taylor Barbazon, Jr. L Brittney Bullis.

Top newcomers: Jr. OH Emily Abramaitys, So. MH Layla Alexander.

Outlook: With just two seniors, the Wildcats will be counting on some new faces to quickly fit in and adapt to varsity volleyball. If those newcomers can do that, Mountain View could take a step up this year.

NORTH STAFFORD

Coach: Emily Dudenhefer

Conference: Conf. 15, 5A–North

Last year: 16–11 overall, 8–8 in district

Top returners: Sr. OH Alexandra Sosik, MB Ebonie Hicks, MB Capri Clark.

Conference: Conf. 4, 6A–South

Last year: 12–7 overall, 9–7 in district

Top returners: Sr. S Danielle Dieters, Sr. MB Shadae Strother, Sr. L Rebecca Statler.

Top newcomers: Jr. OH Megan Pomeroy, Jr. D Nicole Shannon, So. MB Peyton Lindblad.

Outlook: The Bears have traditionally been a good defensive team, but with some good, young additions this year, Slattery thinks the strength of the front line will improve—adding to both the defense and the offense.

Conference: Conf. 4, 6A–South

Last year: 7–14 overall, 3–13 in district

Top returners: Sr. MB India Kithcart, Jr. Haley Parish.

Top newcomers: So. Samantha Larrabee.

Outlook: Their coach thinks the Indians will improve their record for the fourth straight time. They’ve continue to improve at individual skills, and the depth is also better. They will have a new setter this year, though—a key for a successful year.

Top returners: Sr. MH Bo Hayes, Sr. MH Tanisha Washington, Sr. L Krystal Mountjoy.

Coach: Bob Hott

Conference: Conf. 22, 4A–North

Last year: 21–6 overall, 14–0 in district

Top returners: Sr. MB Anna Gallup, Sr. S Bianca Rumbaugh, Sr. L McKay Richardson, Sr. OH Josie Till, Sr. OH Amanda DePalma.

Top newcomers: Jr. D Maddie Caldwell, Fr. OH/S Tenley Hares.

Outlook: The Cougars have a veteran team which should contend for both district and conference titles. Gallup was last year’s district player of the year and an FLS first-teamer. Rumbaugh set a school record for assists last year.

JAMES MONROE

Coach: Shamus Gordon

Last year: 2–12 in district.

Top newcomers: Jr. D Amber Breeden, Jr. D Kayleigh Stevenson, So. MB Micala Peterson, So. OH Mackenzie Miniuk, Fr. S Madi Koban, Fr. S Andrea Wine.

Outlook: An improved offseason program should help the Foxes—nine of 12 varsity players have been playing the sport year-round. That’s improved the individual skills and should show on the court with a more competitive season.

SPOTSYLVANIA

Coach: Lou Wondree

Conference: Conf. 27, 3A–East

Last year: 13–9 overall, 12–2 in district.

Top returners: Jr. OH Britney Kendrick, So. OH Taylor Sale, Sr. MH Courtney Chmielewski, D Caroline Crossman.

Top newcomers: Fr. MH Veronica Lane, OH Ashlyn Green, Jr. S Jordan Gentile, Sr. S Miranda Roberts.

Outlook: The Knights graduated five seniors from last year’s team and need to reload. Three new hitters will join some experienced returners, and Wondree is hopeful the team can compete for the Conference 27 title.

OTHER SCHOOLS

COLONIAL BEACH

Coach: Chase Davidson

Conference: Conf. 43, 1A–East

Last year: 0–20 overall, 0–10 in Northern Neck District.

Top returners: Sr. OH Kora Herrod, Jr. S Brooke Payne.

Top newcomers: So. OH Deniya Hewman, Fr. MB Kenzie Cox.

Conference: Conf. 27, 3A–East

Top returners: Jr. OH Jessica Stallings, So. MH Daisy Dinkens.

Top returners: Sr. OH Juliana Schlunz, Sr. S Nicole Murphy, Jr. MB Brooke Downs, OH Kate Bridges, Jr. L Josie Kritter, DS Courtney Dalimonte.

Top newcomers: Sr. S Donjai Crawford.

FAITH BAPTIST

Coach: Steve McClymonds

Conference: ODACS

Last year: 7–5 overall

Top returners: Sr. H Britleigh Kouldelka, Sr. H AshLynn Morgan, So. H Emily Conroe, Jr. S Alyssa Biggs.

Outlook: Though the Conquerors lost several seniors from last year’s team, expectations are still high. McClymonds thought Faith could go farther in the postseason last year; he’s hoping the team can accomplish that goal this year.
