UMW ROUNDUP: Eagle swimmers start strong at NCAA meet

Nick Eckhoff set a school record in the 500 free as the University of Mary Washington men’s and women’s swim teams began competition in the NCAA Division III meet in Shenandoah, Texas, Wednesday.

Eckhoff’s time of 4:34.73 placed him 23rd overall. Alex Anderson finished 30th overall with a solid 20.86 in the 50 free. The men’s 200 medley relay (Sean Mayer, Peter Slattery, Misha Yelmgren and Anderson) placed 18th with a time of 1:33.28.

The competition will continue today.

 

MEN’S LACROSSE

Sixth-ranked Washington & Lee raced out to a 3–0 lead and held off their Eagle counterparts for a 9–4 nonconference victory in Lexington Wednesday night.

Paul Tunick scored two goals, Luke Dick and Billy Kelly had one score apiece and Zack Del Grosso had 19 saves in goal for the Eagles (5–2), who host Plattsburgh State on Saturday at noon.

 

CAC HONORS

Four UMW athletes have been honored as Capital Athletic Conference athletes of the week, including two in baseball.

Colonial Forge High School graduate Jake Black was named co-pitcher of the week after notching 10 shutout innings of relief in two games. Teammate Seth Jordan went 9 for 16 to earn player of the week honors.

Junior Luke Dick was named men’s lacrosse player of the week after compiling eight goals and four assists in two victories.

Junior Alex Blakhin won the men’s tennis award after sweeping his singles and doubles matches in victories over York and Washington & Lee.
