TENNIS NOTEPAD: Cyclones off to fast start
The season is still young, but Eastern’s View’s boys and girls teams both got off to good starts last week.
Both Cyclones’ teams opened with 9–0 wins over Brentsville District on Tuesday, then defeated perennial Battlefield District front-runners James Monroe last Thursday—the boys winning 5–4 at JM, while the girls won 6–3 at home.
It was the first time in school history that the Eastern View girls have beaten the Yellow Jackets, who have won or shared the district title each year since 2008.
Annakate Tyler (10–1), Rose Bennett (10–4), Sierra Mills (10–6) and Glenna Straus (10–1) each won their singles matches to set the Cyclones up with a 4–2 led heading into doubles play.
Tyler and Bennett then teamed up to get a comfortable 10–1 victory a win at No. 1 singles to secure the win. Mills and Straus also added a 10–4 win at No. 2 doubles.
The Cyclone boys have had slightly more success in their history against JM, splitting the season series and earning a share of the regular-season district title last year and in 2010—the Yellow Jackets won outright district championships in 2011, 2009 and 2008.
The boys match was tight heading into doubles play with the score tied 3–3.
JM’s Fitzhugh Johnson and Walt Mahon easily earned a 10–0 win at No. 1 singles, but seniors Jeb Carroll and Alex Curnow, and Alex West, a sophomore, and Hunter Lacy, a junior, each won closely contested 10–8 matches at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles to give Eastern View the win.
The schools will meet again on April 15.
