UMW ROUNDUP: Eagles split baseball opener

FROM STAFF REPORTS

The University of Mary Washington baseball team opened its 2013 season—the first for new manager Wayne Riser—with a home doubleheader split against Hampden–Sydney.

The Eagles dropped the opener, 1–0, but won the nightcap, 2–0.

Jono Haught and Seth Jordan had RBIs for Mary Washington in the sixth inning of the second game to break a scoreless tie. Michael Straub scattered five hits and two walks in five innings of work.

Colonial Forge graduate Jake Black earned the save with three strikeouts in the seventh inning.

Torey Mancari took the loss in the opener, allowing five hits in 6 innings. Connor Finnerty had two singles in that game.

The Eagles host Eastern Mennonite University next Saturday for a noon doubleheader.
