UMW Roundup: Men’s basketball, swimming

Taylor Johnson came off the bench to score 18 points and pull down six rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team to a 78–43 Capital Athletic Conference victory over Marymount University on Saturday.

Johnson hit five 3-pointers as the Eagles shot 60.5 percent from the field.

Leading by 12 at halftime, the Eagles spotted an opening field goal before going on a 14–0 run to put the game away.

Dylan Farinet added in 15 points and Bradley Riester 11 for the Eagles (10–10, 4–4 CAC), who hit the road to face CAC opponent Wesley College at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Mary Washington returns to action on Wednesday as the Eagles travel to face Capital Athletic Conference foe Wesley College at 8 p.m.

    Marymount (7–14, 2–6 CAC): Reed Scott 12, Khaleeq Everett 2, Aaron Walsh 5, Antonio Rouse 5, Jesse Konadu 2, Timothy Brisco 6, Jourdain McCants 1, Tucker Canary 1, Daniel Ferry 7, Colin Buckhart 2, JC Hoellich 0, Rich Bess 0. Totals: 17 5–12 43.

SWIMMING

The Eagles’ men’s and women’s teams swept host Frostburg State and Marymount in a tri-meet for both teams to remain unbeaten in conference meets this season, with the CAC championship coming up in two weeks.

The women topped the Bobcats, 79–16, and the Saints, 78–16; the men defeated Frostburg State, 79–14, and Marymount, 77–17.

The women earned wins in the 200-meter medley relay (Catherine Perrin, Hannah Hagy, Allison Martin and Ashley Walnut) at 2:11.37, the 800 freestyle (Walnut, 9:56.60), the 200 freestyle (Maddie Carinci, 2:22.06), the 50 free (Stephanie Hallock, 28.44), the 100 butterfly (Hallock, 1:10.65), the 200 IM (Abby Cox, 2:32.92), the 1oo free (Perrin, 1:02.14;), the 100 backstroke (Perrin, 1:12.99), the 400 free (Martin, 5:03.66), the 100 breast (Hagy, 1:20.05) and the 200 free relay (Walnut, Cox, Riley Scalzo and Hallock, 1:56.78).

The men won every race but one. Andrew Garofolo won the 200 free (2:03.38) and 400 free (4:24.62), Zach Eisig claimed the 800 free (9:09.52) and 200 IM (2:21.60), Alex Anderson win the 100 backstroke (59.86) and 100 breaststroke (1:07.65), Andrew Cole took the 50 free (25.96) and Vance Solseth was victorious in the 100 free (56.07). The 200 medley relay team (Anderson, Vince Dunn, Tom Rinaldi and Dan McGuire) won in 1:55. 28, and the 200 free relay (Cole, McGuire, Garofolo and Jack McHugh) finished first at 1:42.40.

Both teams will next compete at the CAC championships in St. Mary’s City, Md., on Feb. 15–17.
