FORK UNION—For the second straight year, Albemarle swept the girls and boys meets at the Commonwealth District championships, but there was still reason to celebrate for many Fredericksburg-area swimmers and teams Friday at Fork Union Military Academy.
Colonial Forge and North Stafford finished tied for second in the boys meet, while Stafford and Colonial Forge finished second and third, respectively, in the girls meet at FUMA’s 25-meter pool.
Andrew Wineinger won the 200-meter freestyle and 400-meter freestyle for the Eagles, who improved two spots from last year.
“I decided to go as hard as I could, and it worked,” Wineinger said. “I think we did great [as a team]. We’ve been working a lot more as a team than we did at the beginning of the season.”
Cameron Brackmann led the way for North Stafford’s boys with a win in the 100 freestyle.
“I just felt good today and swam a strong race,” Brackmann said. “We did a lot better as a team than we did last year, and that’s exciting.”
Stafford’s girls and boys teams both improved upon their performance in last year’s district meet. The Indians finished with 99.50 points in the girls meet to trail only Albemarle, which won for the second straight year.
And Stafford’s boys, who finished in last place last year, moved up into a tie for seventh.
“They came together as a team. That’s what they did,” Indians coach Jonathan Raymond said. “They all work hard, every one of them.”
The Patriots boys finished with 172 points to beat out Colonial Forge and North Stafford, both of which finished with 64 points. Orange County’s boys finished fourth with 62. Albemarle has won eight straight Commonwealth District boys championships.
Ryli Waisanen won the 100 freestyle and the 50 freestyle to lead the Eagles girls to a third-place finish with 84.50 points.
“We had a lot of people graduate, but placing higher definitely helps me. Albemarle is really tough, but I felt like we did really well as a team this year,” Waisanen said.
Other multiple event winners were Brooke Point’s Caroline Wanner, who came in first in the 200 individual medley and the 400 freestyle and Orange’s Alex Montes de Oca, who win the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke.
The top eight individual performers in each event and the top four relay teams advance to next week’s Northwest Region meet at George Mason’s campus in Manassas.
