Battlefield District Swimming Championships: Jackets lap district’s field

THE FREE LANCE-STAR

At one end of the pool deck hung a red, 6-by-2-foot banner with “Skin The Foxes” painted in black.

On Friday night, James Madison did just that.

The Yellow Jackets fended off long-dominant King George in the Battlefield District championship Goolrick Pool at the University of Mary Washington, defending their title in the boys’ competition and ending the Foxes’ four-year reign as the girls’ champion.

James Monroe defeated second-place King George in the boys’ competition by eight points and won the girls’ meet by two points.

“We just wanted to do the exact same thing we did last year,” said James Monroe sophomore Brad Allison, who won the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle titles. “Last year we came in at the end—we were down, but we got stronger.”

The Foxes defeated both James Monroe teams in the first meet back from the holiday break, which provided a sluggish start to the resumption of the season for the Yellow Jackets.

“Honestly, I was nervous coming in because we had lost to them during the regular season,” said James Monroe coach Jordan Filchock. “That week was just a bad week for us, but they trained so hard, were really focused on what we needed to do and we came back. It was close the whole meet tonight, but it turned out in our favor and they swam their hearts out.”

Junior Noland Butler captured titles in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle to lead the girls, who doubled the size of their team to nearly 20 swimmers this season.

And the Yellow Jackets were able to win with the benefit of, and despite, two relay disqualifications. The boys’ 200-yard medley relay and the King George girls’ 200-yard freestyle relay teams were each penalized for an early takeoff, changing the dynamic of the event.

That put more pressure on the two schools’ 400-yard freestyle relay teams in the final event, both of which were won by James Monroe.

King George did not have a single swimmer win an individual event on either side and hoped its depth would be able to carry it through the competition. Projecting the meet was difficult, however, given the weather cancellations that, for some teams, wiped out as many as three meets this season.

Courtland finished third in the boys’ meet, while Chancellor finished third on the girls’ side.

Some of the results in the Battlefield District swimming championships were not available at press time, but will be published at a future date:
