Prep Wrestling Notepad: A final ranking before tourneys

And now, the real wrestling season begins.

We’re sure most wrestlers don’t see it that way, but here at Wrestling Notepad HQ, it’s all about the postseason, which gets underway Saturday in both the Commonwealth and Battlefield districts.

Stafford is hosting the Commonwealth schools, starting at 10 a.m., with finals anticipated at 6 p.m.

Chancellor hosts the Battlefield tournament, also starting at 9 a.m., with finals preliminarily scheduled for 5 p.m.

Washington & Lee hosts the Northern Neck District Tournament today at 5 p.m. with finals starting at approximately 7:45 p.m. And Louisa will join the Jefferson District schools at Western Albemarle, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday.

With that in mind, how ’bout one more crack at our top three in each weight class (and as always, let us know at what we’ve got wrong):

106: 1. Josh Nail, Colonial Forge; 2. Yarhoski Aldiva, Eastern View; 3. D.J. Ahalt, Courtland.

Pinned: By our count, Nail has recorded first-minute pins against every Commonwealth District opponent he’s faced at 106, except Stafford’s David Jett (a pin at 3:32) and fellow Eagle Seth Brodie (a 13–0 win).

113: 1. Bryce Gentry, Colonial Forge; 2. Isaiah Coleman–Combs, Orange; 3. Bryan Ramey, Eastern View.

Advancer: Beyond Coleman–Combs and Gentry, we think Stafford’s Josh Beacorn is certain to advance to the Northwest Region tournament.

120: 1. Josue Beltran, Mountain View; 2. Dylan Hunziker, Colonial Forge; 3. Joe Cafiero, Chancellor.

Anticipate: Beltran and Hunziker wrestled a close 4–2 match earlier this season; a rematch in the final could be a Commonwealth highlight.

126: 1. Dylan Thompson, North Stafford; 2. J.D. Stone, Colonial Forge; 3. Nathaniel Aldiva, Eastern View.

Anticipate this, too: Stone and Thompson have not wrestled this year; this will be a great tone-setter for the region and state tournaments.

132: 1. Hugh Morris, Orange; 2. Joel Baer, Brooke Point; 3. Curtis Harris, Colonial Forge.

No change, but: This is the same order we had these three two weeks ago, but 132 is anybody’s weight. Same in the Battlefield, between Chancellor’s Mark Weinstock and Eastern View’s Kevin Willems.

138: 1. William Inserra, North Stafford; 2. Nico Dunbar, Colonial Forge; 3. Tony Pritt, Eastern View.

Moving in: Having had the chance to compare Pritt’s results to Inserra and Dunbar, we think the Cyclones’ wrestler could be as high as No. 1 at this weight.

145: 1. Tony Neis, Colonial Forge; 2. Austin Jenkins, Eastern View; 3. Devon Bornschein, Stafford.

Could be wrong: We bumped Brooke Point’s Josh Deutel when we were told Bornschein will wrestle the postseason at 145. We’ll give the edge to the Indian for now, but Deutel will have a chance to prove us wrong Saturday.

152: 1. Sean Murphy, Colonial Forge; 2. Ryan Almond, Orange; 3. Reader’s choice.

Reader’s choice? What? Bornschein’s drop to 145 opens up a spot—we think between Brooke Point’s Shane Ice and Eastern View’s Brandon Layher. Got a compelling case for either? Let us know.

160: 1. Sean Raftery, Orange; 2. Logan Shurina, Eastern View; 3. Vinnie Pirrone, Riverbend.

Shakeup: Why? For lots of reasons attrition at one school, a result we didn’t have, and reader feedback. We’re sure about Raftery—we’re very, very unsure about the Commonwealth after that, though.

170: 1. Zach Ryder, Orange; 2. Anthony Carter, Colonial Forge; 3. Isaiah Garrett, Stafford.

And: My continued nod to King George’s Jacob Tucker.

182: 1. Zach Martinez, Colonial Forge; 2. Chris Berrios, Riverbend; 3. Battlefield pick ’em.

No. 3: Last week we said Caroline’s Donald Harris–Smith, but it could be Eastern View’s Bryce Willems, instead.

195: 1. Chris Carter, Colonial Forge; 2. Jacob Ralph, North Stafford, 3. Brandon Gallahan, Chancellor.

Black–Hawk: We’ve got an eye on Brooke Point’s Ryan Cox, too.

220: 1. Cameron Houston, Stafford; 2. Patrick Grayson, Colonial Forge; 3. Jamie Deason, Riverbend.

Battlefield: Maybe the Battlefield’s champ should be No. 3, but we’re not confident enough to make a pick in that district.

285: 1. Sebastian Silva, Stafford, 2. Billy Knabe, Orange; 3. Aston Williams, Colonial Forge.

Just because: We’ve copped out of making heavyweight picks the last two weeks, but we figured this was a week to make a stab in the dark. How these three actually finish Saturday is anyone’s guess.
