UMW: Eagles basketball teams sweep Bobcats

Junior guard Sam Partonen scored 10 points and the University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team held Frostburg State to 27 percent shooting in a 53–42 road victory Saturday.

Carol Dye added eight points, nine rebounds, and four blocked shots for the Eagles (14–5, 6–1 Capital Athletic Conference), who never trailed and won their fifth-straight game.

Elaina Hummel led Frostburg State (6–13, 1–6) with 14 points.

UMW will host Salisbury Wednesday at 6 p.m.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Sean Armstrong scored 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds while Bradley Riester hit four 3-pointers to lead the Eagles to a 65–60 win over host Frostburg State in CAC play.

The Bobcats took the lead several times in the second half, but the Eagles answered each time to tie the score. Trailing by three at 43–40 with 14:25 remaining, Dylan Farinet hit a 3-pointer to tie the score, and a three-point play from Armstrong put the Eagles ahead to stay with 10:53 remaining.

The Eagles shot 41.5 percent and held a 41–29 advantage in rebounds, including a 28–12 margin in the second half.

The Eagles host CAC rival Salisbury University Wednesday at 8 p.m.

INDOOR TRACK

The Eagles’ men’s and women’s teams competed at the Patriot Games at George Mason University.

In the women’s 60-meter hurdles, Brooke Thompson placed fourth (9.71) and Michelle Sutherland (9.85) was fifth. Allan Meyer was 14th in the 200-meter dash at 23.58. Matt Shaughnessy was ninth in the 1,000-meter run. The men’s 1,600 relay finished eighth at 3:35.46. Matt Cronin was 11th in the weight throw at 43 feet, 11 inches.

The track teams will next compete at Haverford College on Feb. 2.
