UMW Roundup: Basketball, track

Carol Dye scored 16 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women’s basketball team to a 50–47 victory over York College on Saturday, putting the Eagles into a half-game lead in the Capital Athletic Conference standings.

Leading by five at halftime, the Eagles watched the Spartans chip away at the lead until it reached 44–43 with a little over 11 minutes to play. Sam Partonen hit a jumper to pad the UMW lead and the teams exchanged free throws to reach the final margin.

UMW (12–5, 5–1) will host Ferrum College at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

E.J. Willis netted a season-high 13 points to lead the Eagles over host York, 64–47, in CAC play Saturday.

Leading by a comfortable 11 points at halftime, the Eagles kept the Spartans at arm’s length midway through the half before pulling away in the final 10 minutes.

Willis added six rebounds for UMW while Sean Armstrong, Dylan Farinet, and Taylor Johnson each scored 11 points for the Eagles.

Mary Washington (8–9, 2–4) will visit Southern Virginia University at 7 p.m. Wednesday in a nonconference game.

INDOOR TRACK

The indoor track and field teams sent several competitors to the University of Maryland Invitational in Largo, Md., on Saturday.

Tara Landy ran a personal best time of 19:10.98 in the women’s 5,000 meters. Quincy Schmidt led the Eagle men in the same event with a 15:58.71, also a personal best time.

Both teams will compete next weekend at the George Mason Invitational at 10 a.m.
