UMW Roundup: Howland beats clock with late 3

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Sophomore Aubrey Howland swished home a buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the University of Mary Washington’s women’s basketball team a 51–49 win at St. Mary’s College on Wednesday.
UMW (11–5, 4–1 CAC) trailed 27–19 at the half, rallied back in the second period to trade leads, but trailed with 10 seconds remaining.
Trying to beat the clock and St. Mary’s press, Sam Partonen appeared to lose possession as time was running out, but Howland corralled the loose ball and threw up the game-winning 3.
Partonen led the Eagles with 20 points and seven rebounds, while Howland scored 11 points and added three steals.
UMW plays at York College on Saturday.
MEN’S BASKETBALL
The Seahawks opened the second half on a 10–0 run and held off the Eagles, 58–54, in a CAC game.
Taylor Johnson led Mary Washington (7–9, 1–4) with 12 points.
SWIMMING
UMW freshmen Zach Eisig and Katie Fago were named CAC swimmers of the week.
Eisig, a Damascus, Md. native, won three events in two dual-meet wins and set a a Salisbury pool record in the 400-yard freestyle (4:17.36). Fago, who hails from East Windsor, N.J., won two events and helped the Eagles set a Salisbury pool mark in the women’s 200 medley relay (2:07.49).
