UMW Men’s Basketball: Eagles nip Generals to claim tournament

Sean Armstrong and Bradley Riester each scored 16 points, and Dom Morra scored five key points in overtime as the University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team beat Washington & Lee University, 72–71, in the host’s Holiday Tournament in Lexington on Thursday night.
Down seven points, the Generals stormed back at the start of the second half, tying up the contest at 47–47 with 9:10 remaining.
A 3-pointer from Javon McDonald gave the Generals a three-point lead—their largest of the game—with 7:26 left. From there, the game seesawed with six lead changes and a pair of ties. Dylan Farinet’s free throws cut the Eagles’ deficit to one at 1:32, and a free throw from Riester tied the score with 35 seconds left. Morra stole the ball with three seconds left, but UMW’s last-second shot fell short, sending the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, theEagles took a four-point lead with 1:32 to go. The Generals cut the deficit to one, but were forced to foul with two seconds left, and their -court-length heave at the buzzer missed.
The Eagles host Wesley College in a Capital Athletic Conference matchup on Saturday at 3 p.m.
