UMW Roundup: Eagles’ men fall to Royals down stretch

FROM STAFF REPORTS

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Sean Armstrong scored 20 points and Lamonte Fields added 14, but the University of Mary Washington men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome 25 turnovers in a 79–71 loss at Eastern Mennonite University Wednesday in Harrisonburg.

Trailing throughout the game, the Eagles cut the deficit to four with 56 seconds left on a free throw by Armstrong, but the Royals scored the final four points at the line to seal the win.

Mary Washington (3–5) face Keene State College in Montclair, N.J., Dec. 28.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Sam Partonen scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Eagles to a 56–50 win over Hartwick College Wednesday in the Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Cruzin Classic.

Hartwick opened the second half by cutting into the Eagles halftime lead, and raced to a six-point advantage at 38–32 with 8:55 remaining. But a pair of Amanda Witmer jumpers and a layin from junior Aby Diop tied the score, and Partonen gave the Eagles the lead for good with a three-pointer with 5:55 left.

The Eagles (8-3) will return to action on January 5 when they host Wesley College at the Anderson Center at 1:00 p.m. in Capital Athletic Conference action.
