Prep Swimming Notepad: Morin, St. Michael both still improving

On Saturday, St. Michael and Fredericksburg Christian swam in a seven-team meet hosted by Seton School at the Freedom Center on the campus of George Mason University.
It was the second meet in two days for St. Michael, which Warriors’ coach Anne Morin said wasn’t a problem for her squad.
“We’ve done it every year since we’ve swam. It gives us a chance to swim with more seasoned teams to try and better ourselves,” Morin said. “By the end of the weekend they are tired, but they like it.”
It was a strong showing by the growing and improving team, whose boys finished 5–2 and girls 3–3 after sweeping Friday’s meet at Fredericksburg Academy.
Alec Morin—the Warriors’ only year-round swimmer among their 22 participants—had a solid meet for St. Michael, including posting an area-best time of 50.35 in the 100-yard freestyle to win the event.
Anne Morin, Alec’s mother, said the junior has worked very hard to improve himself coming into the season.
“He swims for Regency [Park Swim Team] year-round now,” the coach said. “He’s very goal-oriented and would like to go to college to swim.”
Along with the top time in the 100 free, Morin has also posted top-six area times in the 50 free, 200 free and as a member of the 200-free relay team.
In just three meets, St. Michael has already qualified for 11 state events—Alec Morin and Jacob Hallahan in individual events, as well as three relay teams.
FCS ALSO STANDS OUT
The Fredericksburg Christian School boys finished 6–1, while the girls team went 5–1–1 in the George Mason meet. Three FCS swimmers broke school records, while also recording state-meet qualifying times.
Gracie Paterson set a mark in the 200 individual medley (2:24.89), while Courtney Jones did so in the 100 butterfly (1:03.72). David Turbyfill followed suit in the 500 free (5:10.30).
Also posting state-qualifying times were the boys and girls 200-medley and 400-free relay teams. Turbyfill, Paterson and Jones also qualified in the 50 free, 500 free and 100 backstroke, respectively.
