UMW Roundup: Last-second basket denies Eagles a win

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Bianca Ygarza gathered a rebound and made a putback with one second left to lift the Eastern Mennonite women’s basketball team to a 56–54 nonconference win over the 19th-ranked University of Mary Washington in Harrisonburg Tuesday.

The Eagles erased a five-point deficit in the final two minutes, but couldn’t seal the win in the final seconds.

Sam Partonen led the Eagles with 16 points while Carol Dye recorded a double–double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Eagles (6–2, 1–0) will next travel to Christopher Newport on Dec. 15.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

Bradley Riester netted 29 points to lead the Eagles to a 65–59 nonconference victory at Gallaudet University Tuesday in Washington.

Trailing by one point at halftime, the Eagles went on an 8–0 run to take a 50–43 lead with a little over 12 minutes to play. UMW later went on a 14–0 run and withstood a furious Bison rally to earn the victory.

Taylor Johnson scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double–double for UMW (3–4), which next visits Eastern Mennonite University on Dec. 19.
