Top newcomers: Fr. C Alyssa Andreno; So. G Dolores Sims.
Outlook: The Black–Hawks have three freshmen and two sophomores joining Allison and Payne—last year’s leading rebounders—and Poole—last year’s second-leading scorer.
COLONIAL FORGE
Coach: Michelle Darley
Last year: 23–3 overall, 16–0 in district, district champions
Top returners: Jr. C Jahla Osborne; Jr. SG Kenya Holland; So. G Nichole Collins; So. F. Zhane Barnes; So. Bri Sullivan.
Top newcomers: Sr. Kara Campbell; Fr. PG Nia Washington; Fr. F Taylor Deskins.
Outlook: The Eagles graduated four starters—including three seniors—who won back-to-back regular-season district titles. They’ve still got a good inside player in Osborne and a great shooter in Holland to build around. Collins, Barnes and Sullivan all saw lots of playing time last year, too, and will help.
MASSAPONAX
Coach: Adam Brown
Last year: 12–13 overall, 9–7 in district
Top returners: Sr. Patrice Hounshell; Sr. Brianne Comden.
Top newcomers: Victoria Washington; Cierra Wormley; Kayla Chumley; Alexis Willis.
Outlook: The Panthers have just two seniors but Brown thinks they’ve got a talented batch of underclassmen who can contribute. Comden averaged 12.1 points per game last year.
MOUNTAIN VIEW
Coach: Ben Sargent
Last year: 19–7 overall, 13–3 in district
Top returners: Sr. Chelsea Keyser, Sr. Taylor Fernow, Sr. Bianca Dittmann, Sr. Winterlyn Patterson; So. Alexis Davis; Jr. Jasmin Nguyen; Jr. Jessie Dixon.
Top newcomers: So. Erica McCarter; So. Michelle Staggers; Fr. Mariah Aldridge.
Outlook: Defense will again be the key for Mountain View, which has been among the district contenders the last few years. Keyser led the team in scoring last year.
NORTH STAFFORD
Coach: Patricia Oliver
Last year: 9–10 overall, 8–7 in district
Top returners: Sr. PG Caitlin Hite; Sr. G Brianna Dotson; Jr. G China Allen–Window; Sr. F Christine Jackson.
Top newcomers: Sr. F Delores Terry; Jr. G Sam Barbarbczuk; So. G Onyx Jenkins.
Outlook: The Wolverines are young and graduated their leading scorer from last year, but Oliver said the teamwork and commitment have been good during the preseason.
ORANGE
Coach: David Rabe
Last year: Ninth in district
Top returners: Sr. Ashanti Demas; Jr. Ashleigh Williams; Jr. Nicole Shipley; Jr. Ayanna Braxton; So. Rebecca Harvey; So. Markinanna Smith; So. Jada Davis.
Top newcomers: Sr. Aysha Richardson; Fr. Kiani Hudgens; So. Elisha Richardson.
Outlook: The Hornets are still young but many of these girls gained experience last year; they’ll be looking to make some noise in their last Commonwealth District season.
RIVERBEND
Coach: Scott Thomas
Last year: 7–14 overall, 6–10 in district
Top returners: Jr. G Candice Beverly.
Top newcomers: Fr. G Aryiana Young.
Outlook: Beverly was an honorable-mention all-district pick last year.
STAFFORD
Coach: Carl Harris
Last year: 15–11 overall, 11–5 in district
Top returners: Jr. Kendall Parker; Sr. Erin Reiley; Jr. India Kithcart.
Top newcomers: Fr. Grace Epps.
Outlook: The Indians are rebuilding with a young team—they’ve got just one senior, and three freshmen will see playing time.
—BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT—
CAROLINE
Coach: Tim Marshall
Last year: 11–7 overall, fourth district
Top returners: Sr. Shannon Mosby; So. Jazmine Moore; Jr. Nikia Robinson; Jr. Bo Hayes; Jr. Marquita Tillman; Sr. Morgan Woody; Sr. Andrea Gray; So. Deandra Spurlock.
Top newcomers: Fr. Hope Toliver; Fr. Jayla McNeil; Jr. Alexis Logan.
Outlook: The Cavaliers have a mix of experienced and younger players, and Marshall thinks they can be in the top four of the district. Mosby is a good scorer, and Toliver is a talented 5–11 freshman.
CHANCELLOR
Coach: William Griffin
Last year: 12–13 overall, 7–7 in district
Top returners: Jr. G Emily Green; So. G Jayla Harris; So. C Sydney Jackson.
Top newcomers: Sr. G Taylor Hedrick; Jr. G Alana Stokes.
Outlook: The Chargers return all five starters and could be poised to make a run in the Battlefield District and the Region I tournament.
COURTLAND
Coach: J.T. Nino
Last year: 30–1 overall, 14–0 in district, advanced to Group AA, Division 4 state championship game
Top returners: Sr. F Janae McNeal; Sr. F Jessica Hairston; Imani Fennell; Arianna Bradley.
Top newcomers: Fr. Kayla Demps; Jr. Melody Buckley; Sr. McKenzie Stokes; Sr. McKayla Stokes.
Outlook: Four of five starters return from last year’s state runner-up team. The one loss was Anika Trent, who provided good defense and rebounding for the Cougars. She’ll have to be replaced for Courtland to replicate its success this winter.
CULPEPER
Coach: Katie Shaw
Last year: 5–14 overall, 2–12 in district
Top returners: G Caroline Shrewsbury; G/F Colby Mocarski; F Alesha White; F Ericka Arzola.
Top newcomers: G Selia Escalada; G Keynanna Monroe; G Katie Gorby.
Outlook: The Blue Devils have just two seniors, but there is still a lot of experience on the roster. Escalada is an exchange student from Spain who will contribute right away.
EASTERN VIEW
Coach: Mike McCombs
Last year: 20–7 overall, 11–3 in district
Top returners: Sr. F Taylor Shanks; Sr. G Ciara Jackson; Sr. PG Shirlena Bowles; Sr. G Sierra Mills; Jr. G Dominique Scott.
Outlook: The Cyclones return Shanks—one of the district’s best players—for one final season. They’ve got five other seniors and could be the team most likely to push district favorite Courtland.
JAMES MONROE
Coach: Julian Bumbrey
Last year: 21–8 overall, advanced to state quarterfinals.
Top returners: Jr. PG Danielle Bumbrey; Jr. G Brittany Williams; Jr. F Cara Lambert; Sr. G Lyric Swain; Sr. F Ta’Nesha Frye.
Top newcomers: Fr. Monica Dit; So. G Jazmyn Moore; Sr. G De’Asia Turner; So. F Darion Holmes; Jr. G Ashley Cronin.
Outlook: It’s one of the youngest teams James Monroe has had in a while, with just one starter and one part-time starter returning.
KING GEORGE
Coach: Jeff Butler
Last year: 3–17 overall, 3–11 in district.
Top returners: Sr. G Carley Armentrout; Sr. C Kimi Howell; So. G/F Jada Saxon; So. G Kanysha Reynolds.
Top newcomers: Jr. F/C Kristin Vann; So. G Elissa Davis; Fr. G/F Champagne Davis; Fr. F/C Megan Montague.
Outlook: The Foxes are young again and are hoping to improve on last year’s record.
SPOTSYLVANIA
Coach: Warren Tyler
Last year: 3–19 overall, 2–12 in district
Top returners: So. Kortni Simmons; Sr. Bria Carter.
Top newcomers: So. Caroline Sorrell.
Outlook: Carter is one of the area’s best players, but she missed all of last year because of a knee injury. She and Simmons give the Knights a formidable one–two punch.

COLONIAL BEACH
Coach: Keith Dickerson
Last year: 15–9 overall, 6–4 in Northern Neck District
Top returners: Sr. G Caneishia Fulcher; Sr. F Karley Inscoe.
Top newcomers: Fr. Deniya Newman; Fr. Megan Seaman.
Outlook: It’s a young group, but Fulcher and Inscoe give the Drifters two good starters to build around—they both were double-digit scorers last season.
FAITH BAPTIST
Coach: Mark Morgan
Last year: 8–9 overall, 5–7 in ODACS
Top returners: Jr. AshLynn Morgan; Sr. Brook Morgan; So. Saxston Seubert.
Top newcomers: Fr. Emily Conroe.
Outlook: Morgan thinks the Conquerors are strong enough to contend for the ODACS title. AshLynn Morgan was the team’s top scorer last year, and Conroe looks like she’ll be a strong addition.
FREDERICKSBURG ACADEMY
Coach: Jeff Eckerson
Last year: 16–6 overall, 10–0 in DAC
Top returners: Sr. G Simone Roberts; Sr. F Emma Vance; Jr. G Sara Eadie; Jr. G Sabrina Combs; Jr. G Rachael Hoffman; Jr. F Kelsey Gedin; Fr. F Carolyn Topps.
Top newcomers: 8th G Juliet Whitman; Jr. F Jenna LeMay; Sr. G Kelsey Williams.
Outlook: The Falcons graduated leading scorer Courtney Hoffman, but there’s a whole bunch of returners—led by all-conference performers Roberts and Topps—ready to step in and defend FA’s DAC title.
FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN
Coach: Claude Tyler
Top returners: Sr. PG Brianna Clarkson; Sr. F Brittany Burton; Jr. P Dominique Lavender; Jr. G Olivia Krackenfells.
Top newcomers: Fr. F Marnie Streeter.
Outlook: Tyler is new to FCS but certainly not new to the Fredericksburg-area high school basketball scene. He’s been a very successful coach at Riverbend and Spotsylvania and he has a veteran group to work with this winter.
LOUISA
Coach: Jared Soles
Last year: 11–11 overall, 3–7 in Jefferson District
Top returners: Sr. C Maddie Morales; Jr. F Ashley Talley; So. G Breon Washington.
Top newcomers: So. F Rebecca Brookman.
Outlook: Soles has a very, very young team this winter. They’ll be building experience as the season goes.
WASHINGTON & LEE
Coach: Kelsey Farmer
Top returners: Sr. Jaid White.
Top newcomers: Fr. Y’Shina Johnson; So. Armani Ball; So. Amy Saunders; So. Teondra Brooks.
Outlook: With a new coach and four new starters, the Eagles will have a brand-new look this year. Farmer has been excited about the enthusiasm the team has showed so far.
