THE FREE LANCE–STAR

The Park View–South Hill football team was seemingly in good position.

The Dragons had possession of the ball and they were trailing James Monroe by a touchdown less than two minutes before halftime of the Region I, Division 3 championship game Saturday at Maury Stadium.

“I told my coaches we needed to get a two-score lead going into halftime,” JM coach Rich Serbay said, “or they were going to make things very difficult.”

Serbay got his wish when senior linebacker Sean Bates hauled in the Yellow Jackets’ second interception of the game and raced 49 yards for a key score.

James Monroe didn’t look back as it cruised to a 36–0 victory to earn its third regional championship in the past five years.

“I was surprised they tried to throw it because they were actually moving the ball at least a little bit on the run,” JM senior defensive back Darryl Dyson said. “But it was their decision, and it wasn’t a good one.”

The Yellow Jackets (11–1) will host Kettle Run Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Group AA, Division 3 semifinals.

James Monroe defeated Kettle Run, 14–7, in the same contest last year before it suffered a 34–33 loss to Brookville in the state title game.

Serbay said the Cougars have plenty of returners from their 2011 team, and he’s particularly wary of standout running back Joshua Tapscott.

“We’ve got our hands full,” Serbay said. “But I tell you what: I like our chances because I like our defense. I like our chances in any game because I like our defense.”

That defense was on display against the Dragons (9–3).

Park View coach Doug Allison said because the Yellow Jackets are based on speed, he thought his team could out-muscle them. He said he was surprised to learn JM is just as physical as it is fast.

The Yellow Jackets held the Dragons to 174 total yards.

“To be able to both finesse you and power you,” Allison said, “it’s tough for any opponent.”

The Yellow Jackets took a 6–0 lead on sophomore quarterback Jay Scroggins’ 34-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Matt Forjan early in the second quarter.

Forjan caught the pass across the middle of the field, but broke several tackles as he maneuvered his way into the end zone.

“I just kept my feet moving,” Forjan said. “I tried to stay up, keep my balance and never go down.”

The Yellow Jackets didn’t score again until Bates’ interception return with 1:25 left in the second quarter to take a 12–0 lead into halftime.

But they erupted for 21 points in the third quarter.

Dyson scored on a 52-yard reverse. Jarmal Bevels caught a 7-yard touchdown pass from Scroggins and standout linebacker Tony Scott capped the onslaught with a 41-yard fumble return to give JM a 33–0 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Yellow Jackets were pleased to take down a much bigger opponent. Park View starting guard Devin Chinault is 6-foot-4 and 402 pounds, but the Yellow Jackets found their way around him and the rest of the Dragons’ offensive line.

“They didn’t have a lot of speed and we do,” Scott said. “We just kept hitting them and hitting them and they got tired.”
