Eastern Section, Division 1 Football: Chargers shut out Drifters

GROUP A, DIVISION 1 SEMIFINALS

COLONIAL BEACH’S SEASON COMES TO END AT HANDS OF CENTRAL

BY JUSTIN RICE

VICTORIA—Colonial Beach senior Dion Gonzales kept his helmet on as he walked off the field Friday, knowing the Drifters had had their chances in their Eastern Section Division 1 second-round game against Central.

Three times Colonial Beach had the ball in the Chargers’ red zone. Twice the Drifters had first-and-goal. But none of those opportunities resulted in points, and Gonzales’ and Colonial Beach’s season came to an end.

Central overcame the loss of its starting quarterback early in the first quarter, stopped Colonial Beach on those key red-zone possessions—including a fourth-and-goal from the 1 at the end of the second quarter—and pulled away in the second half for a 28–0 win. Central (11–1) will play at second-seeded Sussex next weekend.

Colonial Beach (7–5) will pack up its uniforms and wait for next year, knowing the opportunity for a playoff upset came and went.

“We killed ourselves, all over three yards,” said Gonzales, who had more than a thousand yards rushing this year but was held to 43 yards Friday on 16 carries. “We couldn’t get a push, and they beat us. That’s all it is–they beat us.”

The Chargers and Drifters had played a preseason exhibition game dominated by Central. Colonial Beach coach Scott Foster said before Friday’s game that his team would have to get some breaks to advance.

He got his wish.

Central scored a quick touchdown on its first possession of the game and Colonial Beach went backward on its first drive.

But when the Chargers got the ball back—and had a long touchdown pass erased by penalty—they fumbled the ball back to the Drifters. Colonial Beach took advantage with a 12-play drive that was aided by a third-down personal foul from Central.

But that drive stalled on the Chargers’ 3 and ended with a fourth-down incomplete pass in the end zone.

Another Central mistake—this time a long snap that went over the punter’s head—gave Colonial Beach the ball at the Chargers’ 43 and the Drifters drove to a fourth-and-goal at the 1 with just a few seconds before halftime.

But Nick Graves was stuffed on a run up the middle, and Central raced into its locker room with a 7–0 lead.

“It hurt us. There’s no question about it,” Foster said. “We should have walked into the locker room 7–7. Inside the 5 with four plays and we couldn’t punch it in? That definitely hurt us.”

The Chargers exerted control along the line of scrimmage in the second half.

They blocked a Colonial Beach punt on the Drifters’ first possession of the second half and scored on the very next play to extend the lead. And a fourth-down 34-yard scoring run by Derrick Carpenter with 4:33 left in the third quarter put Colonial Beach in a hole it could not climb out of.

Shamar Shanks had a 65-yard run to move the ball to the Central 14, but two short runs and a sack led to a fourth-down interception, and for one last time, the Drifters came up empty in the red zone.

“I told them,” Foster said, “‘The game is disappointing. Be sad that we lost tonight. But we had a successful season. We’re in the second round of the playoffs when no one picked us to be here. We had the school’s first win over Washington & Lee. That’s good stuff.’

“Someone’s going to win and someone’s going to lose, and you don’t know about winning if you don’t lose.”
