Cross country notepad: Region meets pushed back by storm
Hurricane Sandy has caused the postponement of the Region I cross country meet, Chancellor High School athletic director Rod Crooks said.
The meet was scheduled to take place Wednesday today, but will now be held Friday at Loriella Park in Spotsylvania County at 3:15 p.m. The meet features schools from the Battlefield, Bay Rivers and Southside districts.
The Northwest Region meet is still expected to be held Thursday at Panorama Farms in Charlottesville, Mountain View coach Dave Davis said. That event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Davis said he hasn’t talked to anyone in Charlottesville about the conditions there, but added that Panorama Farms is capable of holding up in wet conditions.
Davis called the Virginia High School League to put forth a contingency plan in case the meet needed to be postponed, but so far that doesn’t appear to be the case.
“We didn’t know what we were going to get,” Davis said of the possible hurricane fallout. “So we laid the groundwork in case it was worse than what we got.”
The postponement of the Battlefield meet should provide some training time. Teams across the Fredericksburg region and elsewhere weren’t able to practice on Monday or Tuesday because schools were closed.
The top 15 individuals and top four teams from last week’s district meets will participate in regionals.
