Prep Football: Grant, Cougars roll to a win

After one quarter of Friday night’s Battlefield District contest with visiting Eastern View, it appeared Courtland was feeling the effects of last week’s 10–7 slugfest loss to James Monroe.

The Cougars fumbled on their first possession of the game, and then punted on their next two possessions after gaining just 13 yards.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones, who entered the game on a two-game winning streak, seized the opportunity and scored on a 16-yard keeper by quarterback Brandon Settle late in the period to grab a 7–0 lead.

But this Courtland squad has become a battle-tested unit under coach J.C. Hall after close encounters with district heavyweights King George, Chancellor and JM. And once the shaky start ended, they proved it.

With running back Darien Grant leading the way with three scoring runs, the resurgent Cougars scored six unanswered touchdowns and rallied for an impressive 42–7 victory.

Grant played a big role in Courtland’s dominance on the ground. He finished with 90 yards on 10 carries as the Cougars (5–4, 4–2) piled up 303 yards on 53 rushing attempts. Fellow back Anton Jenkins added a game-high 118 yards and a score.

Patrick Edwards and quarterback Eric Washington hooked up for a 46-yard scoring strike, and Josh Howard scored on a 5-yard scamper to complete the parade of touchdowns.

Courtland concludes its regular season at Spotsylvania next week, while Eastern View (4–5, 2–4) travels to King George.
