Prep Field Hockey Notepad: Battlefield teams jockey for Region I spots
The four teams advancing to the Battlefield District tournament are set: Top-seeded Chancellor will play King George at 5:30 p.m. Monday, and James Monroe and Courtland will meet in the second game.
What will be decided next week—the tournament will be played on King George’s turf field—is how the Battlefield District teams will align against the Bay Rivers teams in the Region I playoffs.
The region decided Wednesday to not include a Southside District team in the Region I tournament—the Southside representative has typically not fared well in region play—so there will instead be four teams from the Battlefield and four from the Bay Rivers.
That bracket puts the Battlefield’s top seed (Chancellor) and third seed (likely to be decided in next Wednesday’s district consolation game) in the same half-bracket with the Bay Rivers’ No. 2 and No. 4.
The bottom half of the Region I tournament is the Bay Rivers’ No. 1 (Tabb) and No. 3 with the Battlefield’s No. 2 and No. 3.
The Battlefield District’s consolation and championship games are scheduled for a doubleheader Wednesday starting at 5:30 p.m. If Chancellor loses in the district semifinals, a consolation game will not be necessary.
The Region I tournament begins Monday, Oct. 29, with the semifinals the following Wednesday and the final the following Friday. The higher-seeded teams will host games in regional play.
