Prep Football: Healing Jackets shut out Culpeper
BY JUSTIN RICE
James Monroe quarterback DeMontaz Brown missed on his first two passes of the season. His biggest contribution Friday—when he had finally healed enough from an offseason injury to take the field—was sprinting downfield to throw a block on a fourth-quarter run.
For Brown, though, it didn’t matter.
He’s back—a sign James Monroe is finally getting healthy.
“We’re getting a new person back every week,” said Brown, who came into the game with five minutes, 47 seconds left in JM’s 41–0 win against Culpeper. “Week by week, we’re getting better.”
Before Brown came in, JM sophomore Jay Scroggins showed why the Jackets (7–0, 4–0) are still unbeaten, in spite of a long list of injured contributors.
Scroggins threw three touchdown passes to lead JM’s 28-point second-quarter outburst.
Tevin Brooks recovered a Culpeper fumble in the end zone with 9:17 left in the second quarter to put the Jackets up 7–0.
Culpeper fumbled on the first play of the ensuing drive and two plays later Scroggins hit Jarmal Bevels on a 20-yard touchdown toss.
JM then forced a Culpeper punt, and again it took Scroggins just two plays to find Darryl Dyson on a 39-touchdown throw.
And on fourth down with just seconds remaining in the first half, Scroggins threw a 36-yard strike to Matt Forjan to make it 28–0.
“Jay’s doing a real good job,” Brown said. “He’s got command of the offense, and he’s throwing the ball really well. We don’t have too many worries with Jay at quarterback.”
And in the fourth quarter, Adrian Boone made his return. He hadn’t played since JM’s win against Eastern View on Sept. 21.
On Boone’s first touch—a handoff from Brown after the QB threw his two incomplete passes—he went 75 yards for the last JM score. Brown was sprinting downfield with Boone, looking for players to block.
