Prep Football: Wolverines rebound with win

NORTH STAFFORD GETS BACK ON WINNING TRACK WITH A WIN OVER ’HAWKS

BY JIM SWING

A loss to county rival Colonial Forge last week, its first of the season, left a sour taste for North Stafford.

A pair of explosive plays backed by a strong defensive outing, which led to Friday’s 30–7 pounding of Brooke Point, was just what the doctor ordered for the ailing Wolverines.

“We tried to bounce back from last week,” wide receiver Anthony Shegog said. “And that’s all we wanted.”

For a moment, it looked as if North Stafford wasn’t going to get what it wanted. A slow start, perhaps left over from last week’s poor offensive outing, slowed the Wolverines.

Quarterback Von Purvis attempted a deep pass up the sidelines on third and eight that landed in the hands of Brooke Point’s Tyus White for an interception.

Six plays later Black–Hawks quarterback Alex Cox hit Aaron Sanders for a 5-yard touchdown to take an early lead.

But the Wolverines struck right back on the ensuing possession.

A 27-yard dash by running back Cedrick Watkins set up Purvis for a 23-yard touchdown run to even the score.

The Wolverines’ defense, which was sturdy all night, forced a short punt on the next drive, which was followed by a 5-yard touchdown run by Watkins four plays later.

North Stafford’s next three possessions would end scoreless. And then it blew the doors off of the whole thing.

With 30 seconds left in the first half, Shegog returned a punt 65 yards for a touchdown. Then, on the second play of the second half, Andre Hamilton intercepted a Cox pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown.

“We needed some people to step up and my number was called,” Hamilton said.

Just over five minutes later, Joey Slye tackled Brooke Point running back Johnathon Horsley in the end zone for a safety.

Three quick, explosive plays would be the difference for the Wolverines (5–1), who just wanted to bounce back.

“We couldn’t finish a couple drives,” North Stafford coach Joe Mangano said. “But the big plays bailed us out.”
