Prep Football: Cougars crisscross Culpeper in a rout

MASON, GRANT PILE UP RUSHING YARDS USING COURTLAND’S CHANGE-UP

BY JUSTIN RICE

The counter crisscross—a double handoff between two halfbacks—is meant as a change of pace in the wing–T offense.

Friday it worked so well, Courtland was using it as its bread and butter.

Cougar halfbacks Darien Grant had 123 rushing yards on 14 carries and backfield mate Brandon Mason had 117 on seven rushes, and Courtland (3–3, 2–1) cruised to a 43–0 Battlefield District win against Culpeper.

A good portion of Grant’s and Mason’s yardage—the Cougars had 371 rushing yards on 40 carries—came on the crisscross, a play usually saved for opportune moments when Courtland hopes to catch an opponent off guard.

“We’ve never run it that much,” Grant said. “This is the first time we’ve run it back to back to back like that. Truthfully, it hasn’t been working that well the last couple weeks.”

Mason scored on runs of 30 and 29 yards. Anton Jenkins, who rushed for 83 yards on 11 carries, scored twice, and Jared Fehrens caught a 60-yard touchdown throw from Eric Washington.

And at the end, it was only Grant who hadn’t crossed the goal line.

“Mason was telling me make sure we get Darien in the end zone,” Courtland coach J.C. Hall said. “That’s how unselfish he is—he wanted to make sure Darien got one. How fitting is that for those two guys?”

Culpeper (0–6, 0–2) plays at James Monroe next Friday. Courtland travels to Caroline, in search of its third straight district win.

“We’ve got good momentum and a good Caroline team coming up,” Hall said. “We’ve still got a lot of ball to play—four quality Battlefield District opponents, and we want to compete for the district title. We’ve got to keep working.”
