Prep football: Black-Hawks grab first win

 BY JIM SWING

By the time Brooke Point had earned its first win of the season, the entire team—soggy jerseys, boots and all—was ready to board the buses and ship out of Orange County.

The victory had come with ease, a 49–0 win over Orange, but had to be earned in a constant downpour, which made for a swamped field and produced six fumbles between the two teams.

“I hated it,” Black–Hawks running back Johnathon Horsley said motioning toward his soaked cleats.

What he couldn’t complain about was the offensive output he managed.

Horsley torched the Hornets defense for three rushing touchdowns in the second quarter to give Brooke Point a comfortable 35-point halftime lead.

“I went out there and I played my hardest; it was a team effort,” he said. “Thank God for my linemen, I couldn’t do it without them.”

Wide receiver Tyus White had quite a night of his own. Brooke Point’s wide receiver caught a touchdown, ran for one and returned a punt 70 yards for a score.

What the Black–Hawks did differently from the previous four games was simple, really.

“We blocked and tackled better,” coach Jeff Berry said. “I know that’s the simplistic thing, but that’s what it was.”

On the other side of the ball, Brooke Point’s defense was stellar.

They held Orange to -13 yards of total offense and forced five fumbles.

The defense forced two interceptions  from Hornets quarterbacks Damian Clark and Antonio Murphy.

Orange’s only real bright spot was a 12-yard pass from Clark to wide receiver Dominique Ellis early in the second quarter.

“The defense played well,” Berry said. “We’re getting better, we’ve still got a long way to go.”

The Black–Hawks (1–4) face a daunting task against North Stafford (4–1) next Friday, but they’re glad to have the first win under their belt.

“It feels good,” White said. “We worked hard this week. We knew that we had a chance to get our first victory and we did it.”
