Prep Football: Chargers overcome miscues, roll to win

BY JUSTIN RICE

When Chancellor got out of its own way, it looked very sharp Friday in a lopsided Battlefield District opener.

The Chargers (3–1, 1–0) got four touchdown passes from quarterback Darrin Jackson—two to Tyler Morton—and overcame 16 penalties for 161 yards to rout Culpeper, 42–6.

The Blue Devils (0–4, 0–1) were without coach Mike Williams, who was involved in a post-game incident last week at Charlottesville. Assistant Eric Dinkens coached Culpeper, and Williams is expected to return to the sidelines next Friday when the Blue Devils host Spotsylvania.

The penalties were the only thing that slowed the Chargers on Friday.

Jackson’s first touchdown pass to Morton came on a second-and-goal from the Culpeper 30, after three yellow flags in four snaps.

Three would-be Chancellor touchdowns were called back during the first half.

Still, Jackson was sharp.

He had scoring throws of 30, 45, 79 and 29 yards.

The 79-yarder was to Raymond Buckner and put Chancellor up 28–0 at the half.

Dominic Kaopua, who finished with 16 carries for 133 yards, scored on an 18-yard run, and Jackson’s last scoring throw—a 29-yarder to DeAndre Miller—put the Chargers up 35–0 and started the running clock.

The Chargers play at rival Courtland next Friday, and Chargers coach Bob Oliver is sure his team will have the mistakes cleaned up by then.

“It was a nightmare,” Oliver said. “That’s just a lack of discipline, I guess, on our part. We can’t do that in the Battlefield District.

“Some of those we’re playing hard, and I’ll take that. But some of them were silly, and that’s what I don’t like. We’re going to cut those silly penalties out.”
