UMW Roundup: UMW shows its Steele, blanks Yellow Jackets

FIELD HOCKEY
Freshman Jenna Steele scored a pair of goals to lead the 12th-ranked University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 4–0 victory over Randolph–Macon College Wednesday in Ashland.
Caitlin Baker and Florence George also scored for the Eagles. UMW led 42–7 in shots on goal and had 21 penalty corners to four for the hosts. Claire Gianelle had four saves in goal.
The Eagles (6–0) will next visit Washington & Lee on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
WOMEN’S SOCCER
Jessica Bednarcik scored her sixth goal of the season to carry the Eagles to a 2–1 win at Methodist University.
Michelle Gibbons scored the game’s first goal off an assist from Lizzie Weast. After Methodist knotted up the score, Bednarcik provided the game-winner.
Charlotte Owens had four saves in goal.
The Eagles (5–0) will host Frostburg State on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a battle of Capital Athletic Conference undefeated teams.
MEN’S SOCCER
Patrick Kelly scored a pair of goals, Nick Shepherd scored one goal and assisted on another to pace the Eagles to a 3–0 victory over Catholic University at the Battleground Athletic Complex.
Shepherd opened the scoring for UMW on a pass from senior Matt Alter. The Eagles stretched the lead to 2–0 before the half on Kelly’s goal off Shepherd’s assist.
The Eagles capped the scoring as Kelly scored on an Omar Ismail assist.
Tyler Back recorded his third shutout in four games.
The Eagles (4–1) visit Montclair State University Saturday at noon.
VOLLEYBALL
Christine Tran recorded 15 digs as the Eagles swept Frostburg State in three games—25–19, 25–22, 25–14—in both teams’ CAC opener at the Anderson Center on Wednesday night.
Kaitlynn Wickersham had nine kills and five digs, Nora Forknall drilled six aces and Courtney Guengerich set 14 assists for the Eagles (4–1), who travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Saturday at 11 a.m.
