Prep Football: With big game looming, FCS cruises in victory
BY TOM LEISS
Fredericksburg Christian made short work of overmatched Quantico on Friday, rolling to a 52–0 home win in their Patriot Football Conference opener.
Hunter Griffis rushed seven times for 74 yards and three touchdowns, Cody Goode scored twice and Landon Sharp once to put the game away for the Eagles (2–0, 1–0) before the intermission.
FCS’ first two wins have come rather easily, which coach Tim Coleman said can have its drawbacks, but added that it has allowed the team to work on its depth.
“The competition maybe has not been what we’ve wanted it to be to get prepared,” he said. “But it has allowed us to get some kids ready that are going to have to give some kids a blow in the near future.”
The Eagles will take a big step up in competition next week when they visit Group AAA, Division 5 Glen Allen—the first public school FCS has ever played.
Coleman said how the team performs in practice next week will show if they are ready for the challenge.
Senior offensive and defensive lineman A.J. Addison agreed and added that the team has been waiting for the opportunity.
“The team we’re playing next week could be our big stepping stone and it’s not going to be easy,” he said. “So, we’ve just got to come out and practice hard next week so we can go down there and show them what we’ve got.”
