Prep Cross Country: Chancellor Invitational
INDIANS’ LOWERY LEAVES
GIRLS’ FIELD IN HER DUST
BY ADAM HIMMELSBACH
Stafford’s Hannah Lowery dealt with some shin pain during the summer, but over the past month or so, she has ramped up the intensity of her training.
That was apparent at the Chancellor Invitational cross country meet at Loriella Park on Saturday morning, as Lowery breezed to an impressive victory by nearly 15 seconds. Lowery finished the hilly course in 19 minutes, 17.8 seconds.
“She was bottled up a little bit at the beginning with the way the new course was laid out,” Stafford coach Pete Augrom said. “But by the time they got to a mile she was out to an eight-second lead already, so that was good to see.”
It was otherwise a mostly quiet day for area runners. On the boys side, Brentsville District High School won the team title, and Collin Crilly of Our Lady of Good Counsel breezed to a first-place finish in 16:32.8. Stafford’s Ian McLeod placed second in 16:45, and the Indians placed third as a team.
Riverbend’s boys placed second with 130 points. Seven Bears were among the top 50 overall.
“The boys ran extremely well,” Riverbend coach Brian Treakle said. “We don’t put a whole lot of emphasis on the early-season races as far as place goes, but we look more at how the boys run as far as following the race plan, and they did that today. They hung back at the start and gradually moved up throughout the race.”
Although Lowery dominated the girls race, Oakton was in control as a team. It had four of the top seven finishers and won the title with 33 points.
The Colonial Forge girls placed second with 103 points, but head coach Sean Leyh was not concerned with the results. He had some of his better freshman girls and boys runners compete in the junior varsity race, and his runners—like many others —wore training shoes rather than traditional racing spikes.
“It’s not like in football where if we lose today, it makes a big difference,” Leyh said. “We kept them out of racing spikes to keep the wear and tear down, and to make them work a little harder today.”
Several coaches said they did not want to wear out their runners this early in the season. Augrom, for one, said his teams showed fatigue toward the end of last year.
“Our approach is that we’re taking it a little bit slower this year,” Augrom said, “so we’re fresher at the end.”
