Prep football: Louisa rolls past Orange
BY JIM SWING
After postgame handshakes had passed, Louisa players trotted down the field marveling at the scoreboard.
“Look at that scoreboard,” one played noted.
It read 48–0, the pounding the Lions had just laid on Orange.
Last Friday night’s loss to Eastern View left a bad taste for Louisa. This Friday, they vowed, would be different.
“We took that as motivation,” said Lions running back Deion Johnson, who had a pair of touchdowns. “We said next week we were going to shut out Orange and we’re going to get that [win].”
And behind the arm and leg of quarterback Zac Jackson, that’s what they did. Jackson was stellar, rushing for two touchdowns and throwing for two.
He made his initial strike with one minute left in the first quarter, a six-yard run up the middle.
A couple minutes later he would pick off Orange quarterback Garret Johnson just before running for another touchdown.
For Louisa, it was all about capitalizing on turnovers. Late in the second half Jared Koss intercepted Johnson. Five plays later Jeremy Jackson pounded the ball into the end zone from two yards out to give the Lions a 28-point cushion.
“You turn the ball over you lose,” Louisa head coach Jon Meeks said.
The Lions offense was complementary to their stifling defense, which gave up just 31 yards of total offense. Louisa held the Hornets 0-for-6 on third downs and shut down their only fourth down attempt. The game ball went to defensive coordinator Princell Brockenborough, who earned his first shutout.
“We had great heart and great execution,” Jackson said. “And that’s what it takes to win a football game.”
