College notebook: Dean is JMU’s new softball coach

After six successful seasons at Radford University, former Orange High School softball coach Mickey Dean is moving to James Madison University.

Dean, a graduate of nearby Spotswood High School, compiled a record of 241–116 at Radford and won the last four Big South Conference regular-season titles, as well as tournament crowns (and NCAA tournament berths) in 2009 and 2010. He was named Big South coach of the year four times.

Dean coached Orange to back-to-back Group AA state championships in 1998 and ’99, and he recruited the Fredericksburg area heavily while at Radford. Senior third baseman Nichole Beall (Culpeper) became the Highlanders’ first All-American in 2012.

At JMU, Dean inherits a team that includes Eastern View graduate Anna Klump, a rising junior.

“It’s home,” Dean told The Roanoke Times. “This is where I grew up. I’m 15 minutes from my parents’ home, and my whole family lives here.”

The University of Mary Washington’s Deena Applebury was named 2011–12 College Division women’s coach of the year by the Virginia Sports Information Directors. Applebury led the Eagles to a 30–1 record and within one victory of their second NCAA Division III final four appearance.

Recent UMW graduates Katie Wimmer and Jenna McRae were both named to the all-state first team along with player of the year Kaitlyn Fischer of Marymount.

Recent Indiana (Pa.) summa cum laude graduate Jackie Hynson (King George) earned several postseason academic honors, including IUP female scholar athlete of the year; a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Top Ten Award; and a Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-American.

An 11-time Division II All-American, she’s also one of 429 nominees for the NCAA Woman of the Year award, which honors athletics, academics and community service. The winner and the top 30 honorees will be announced Oct. 14.

The Capital Athletic Conference, which includes UMW, announced last week that Penn State Harrisburg will join the league July 1, 2013. Christopher Newport University and Southern Virginia University will join on the same date.
