Betsy Carter’s Horse Scene: Collegiate riders display their talents
The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association team and individual championships are hotly contested each year. This year’s IHSA team championship, the Collegiate Cup, went to St. Lawrence University, under the coaching of Mary Drueding.
Drueding also recently was awarded the IHSA Lifetime Achievement Award. She won the Collegiate Cup in 1994 while coaching Colby–Sawyer College’s equestrian team to victory. This was the first time in the IHSA’s 39-year history that a hunter seat team coach has won two championships at two different schools.
The Cacchione Cup, the IHSA’s top individual award, went to Kelsie Bonham of Savannah College of Art and Design. A graduating senior, Bonham won the reserve championship in 2010. Skidmore College’s Kelly Campbell was second and Stanford University’s Claire Margolis was third.
The intercollegiate shows are held throughout the school year while the teams and riders accumulate points. The riders must ride unknown horses provided by the host school at each meet. Therefore, riders must be able to quickly analyze their mounts and ride them according to the individual horse’s needs.
It requires many hours of riding different horses to be able to get on an unknown horse and ride it well.
