BOYS

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

ERIC CICCONE

Riverbend senior

Ciccone is The Free Lance–Star’s player of the year not just for his exceptional play at No. 1 (he was 18–3 in singles and 20–1 in doubles), but for leading the Bears to the Commonwealth District’s regular-season title.

BRANDON BAUTISTA

James Monroe senior

Bautista was at No. 1 singles as the Jackets won their first ever Region I team title. He played with Juhan Washington at No. 1 doubles and finished 14–3.

IAN HOWDYSHELL

Riverbend junior

The Bears’ No. 2 seed was unbeaten at that line this year. His only loss in a 19–1 campaign was at No. 1. He also paired with Eric Ciccone to win 20 of 21 doubles matches.

LAWRENCE HUNTER

Chancellor senior

Hunter advanced to the Region I tourney in both singles and doubles. He was second in the district singles and finished the regular season with a 12–2 singles mark.

FITZHUGH JOHNSON

Fred. Academy junior

Johnson dominated Delaney competition—he was unbeaten in conference and lost 10 total games. He shared DAC player of the year honors this spring.

ALFONSO de UGARTE

Culpeper senior

An exchange student from Bolivia, de Ugarte was 14–0 in the regular season and won the Battlefield District’s singles title. He also advanced to the Region I individual tournament final.

CHRISTOFORATOS

James Monroe

Christoforatos is well-known as a key figure in the region’s tennis scene. This year he took the Jackets to new heights, as they upset Jamestown to win the school’s first Region I tennis title.

GIRLS

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

TAYLOR NICHOLS

Riverbend senior

Nichols’ was 16–0 in the regular season and unbeaten during the district and region team tournaments. She led the Bears to their first ever Northwest Region team title. She’ll play at Fairmont State next year.

AUDREY DYER

James Monroe senior

Dyer helped lead the Yellow Jackets to another Battlefield District team championship. She was 18–3 at No. 1 singles and 18–1 at No. 1 doubles playing with teammate Erin Dyer.

ANNE DOUGLAS GOFORTH

Fred. Academy senior

Goforth was the DAC player of the year. She was undefeated in DAC singles matches, losing just nine total games. She also had a strong doubles team with Mary Gray Johnson.

JULIA KLACZYNSKI

Riverbend senior

Klaczynski was 15–0 at No. 2 singles in the regular season and did not lose in the district or regional team tournaments. She also formed a strong doubles team with Taylor Nichols.

KATHLEEN NAMEY

Colonial Forge senior

The Eagles’ top seed finished 20–6 in singles play during her senior season and 12–6 in doubles. She led Colonial Forge into the region team tournament semifinals.

ANNAKATE TYLER

Eastern View junior

Tyler was the Battlefield District’s individual singles champion and advanced to the Region I individual tournament. She also won the district doubles title with teammate Rose Bennett.

Edwards’ girls had an exceptional season. They won the Commonwealth District’s regular-season and tournament titles, and the school’s first Northwest Region team title.
