Impact, Piranhas play scoreless tie
FROM STAFF REPORTS
The visiting Fredericksburg Impact and the Virginia Beach Piranhas both had apparent goals negated by offside calls in Saturday’s
0–0 W-League soccer tie.
Jennie Krauser’s potential game-winning score for Fredericksburg in the 90th minute was waved off by the assistant referee, who ruled she was offside.
Earlier, Piranhas forward Esther Anyanwu found space in the Impact defense and beat Fredericksburg goalkeeper Melissa Pacheco, but that score also was reversed.
Kelsey Pardue’s shot from just outside the penalty box barely missed the crossbar in the 77th minute.
Pacheco finished with 10 saves for the Impact (4–1–1), which will seek to avenge its only loss on Wednesday at the Maryland SportsPlex against the first-place D.C. United Women (6–0). Kickoff for the top two teams in the Atlantic Division is slated for 7:30 p.m.
PDL MEN’S LEAGUE
ROYALS 1, HOTSPUR 0
Seth Rudolph’s goal in the 33rd minute lifted the visiting Northern Virginia Royals to a 1–0 Premier Development League win over the Fredericksburg Hotspur on Sunday.
It was the second loss of the weekend for the Hotspur (5–2–2), who dropped a 3–1 road decision to the Virginia Beach Piranhas Saturday despite a 16–5 edge in shots.
Ryan Sappington scored in the second half for Fredericksburg, which will host D.C. United’s U23 team in an exhibition Wednesday at the University of Mary Washington before resuming PDL play Friday against the Real Maryland Monarchs.
