Pro Baseball: Carroll signs deal with Rays

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Former King George High School baseball standout Damion Carroll inked his contract with the Tampa Bay Rays Saturday. He signed on the same day he graduated from the high school.

The Rays immediately assigned Carroll to Port Charlotte of the rookie Gulf Coast League. It’s undetermined if he’ll pitch this season.

The 6-foot-3 right-handed pitcher was drafted in the sixth round (212th overall) in the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft earlier this month.

Carroll’s deal reportedly called for a $190,000 signing bonus and a four-year college scholarship.

The Virginia High School Coaches Association’s Group AA state player of the year went 8–0 this past season with a 1.30 ERA and 131 strikeouts in 66 innings. He led the Foxes to the Group AA state tournament.
