Betsy Carter’s Horse Scene: Test your riding skills at Woodpecker Farm
Looking for some summer fun or a different show experience? Tayloe Clements of Woodpecker Farm in Woodford is sponsoring a Summer Fun and Games show on Saturday, May 26, for a senior class project.
The show is open to all competitors of any riding discipline. The show begins at 4 p.m., so you and your horse or pony are sure to be cool. Classes are only $8, which means you can have lots of fun playing many of the games she is offering.
The show begins with the “ride a buck” competition, so the winner will be taking home money. Tight legs are required to win this class and glue is not allowed.
Next will be the precarious egg and spoon race, followed by the technical ribbon race, In this race you’d better hope your horse travels straight and can steer while you are using only one hand since the other hand will be holding the other end of the ribbon.
The boot scramble is next, which means you have to be able to get on and off of your horse without a mounting block. Teams of apple bobbers will compete next, followed by key hole.
There will have to be a short break before the next class because it is the costume class. You’ll be amazed at the outfits horses and ponies will endure for the entertainment of their riders.
Musical horses is next for those horses who can be cued to place their feet on a paper bag when the music stops and stay there until the music starts again. The barrel race is fast and the winner will be the horse or pony who can make tight turns at incredible speeds. Simon says will bring the show to an exhausting finish.
Casual dress is expected. Helmets and boots are required, and dinner will be available. All first-place winners will get a prize. There will be also be high point junior and senior rider prizes. For directions, check out their website.
