Cougars, Jackets earn region honors

After winning the Region I girls basketball titles, Courtland and James Monroe also made off with the region’s top individual honors.

Courtland’s Janae McNeal (Division 4) and JM’s Keyontae Williams (Division 3) were named region players of the year in coaches’ voting. Courtland’s J.T. Nino and JM’s Julian Bumbrey were also named region coaches of the year after leading their teams to regional championships and berths in this weekend’s Group AA state tournaments.

Joining McNeal and Williams on the all-region first team were Courtland’s Anika Trent and Jessica Hairston; Eastern View’s Taylor Shanks; Brunswick’s Myneshia Walker; and Grafton’s Rose Mulherin.

Spotsylvania freshman Kortni Simmons was named to the all-region second team.

ALL-DELANEY CONFERENCE

Fredericksburg Academy placed three players on the Division 2 all-Delaney Conference girls team: guards Courtney Hoffman and Simone Roberts and forward Carolyn Topps.

VISAA PLAYOFFS

Fredericksburg Christian School’s boys and girls each received first-round byes in the Virginia Independent Schools Division II playoffs and will host a second-round game Wednesday.
