Commonwealth Wrestling Meet: Eagles efficiently claim district crown

BY ADAM HIMMELSBACH

The Colonial Forge wrestling team continued its dominance of the Commonwealth District last night, claiming yet another championship.

The Eagles won individual crowns in nine of the 14 events and finished with 302 points.

“I told the kids when they asked me, my expectations are to win all 14 weight classes,” Eagles coach Bill Swink said. “We didn’t do that, but we wrestled very well.”

J.D. Stone, Conner Mareina, Michael Hayes, Tony Neis, Gary Woods, Sean Murphy, Zach Martinez, Quinton Winters and David Reck all claimed individual crowns for Colonial Forge.

“We work hard in the offseason, and I think that’s the biggest thing for us,” Murphy said. “We hope we can do the same thing in regions next week.”

When the Eagles accepted their first-place trophy, it had an all-business feel.

But on the other side of the gym, Orange, the host school, was bubbling after its second-placed finish.

Ryan Almond, Sean Raftery and Billy Knabe claimed individual titles for the Hornets.

“It’s an honor to be able to wrestle here in my hometown with my friends,” said Knabe, who competes in the 285-pound weight class. “It was a fun day.”

Stafford’s Logan Jackson took the 195-pound title, and Mountain View’s Jonny Lopez won a championship at 106.

The Northwest Region tournament will be held at Forest Park High School next weekend.
