Battlefield District Swim Meet: JM boys joins King George girls atop district

BY TAFT COGHILL JR.

The King George High School swimming program was able to extend one streak, but another came to an end last night at the University of Mary Washington.

The Foxes’ girls used their depth to capture their fourth straight Battlefield District championship without an individual winner. On the boys side, James Monroe won their first district title since 1999 behind a strong effort from freshman standout Brad Allison, who won two individual events and anchored two victorious relay teams.

The Yellow Jackets’ victory ended King George’s three-year run of titles in the competition.

“When we started the season, I didn’t see this coming at all,” said JM first-year head coach Jordan Filchock, a senior at Mary Washington. “But after we beat King George in the second meet of the season, I was like, ‘All right, we can do this.’ We just worked really hard from there.”

The Yellow Jackets finished 6–0 in dual meets during the regular season. Last night, they also received a boost from victories by Peter Stoffel (100-yard butterfly) and Kyle Hayes (100 freestyle).

Allison earned his victories in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

“We were hoping to win, but we knew it was going to be tough,” Allison said. “We ended up taking some events we thought we would split. Some of our swimmers really stepped up.”

The King George girls don’t have the individual standouts like JM. But head coach Debi Bernardes said they’re the true definition of a team.

Some of their girls have endured significant injuries this season, which has left them with just one year-round swimmer. Kourtney Miller competed last night with a fractured ankle.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs this year,” Bernardes said. “But our girls have stayed strong.”

Leeann Miller took second place in the 200 individual medley. Taylor Brandts captured second in the 100 backstroke. The Foxes’ quartet of Brandts, Miller, Jackie Collins and Rebecca Liskiewicz won the 200 individual medley relay. Rachael Webb replaced Collins as the Foxes earned the 400 freestyle relay title, too.

Several Battlefield swimmers will be back in action next week at the Group AA state meet in Christiansburg.
