High School Swimming Preview Capsules

COMMONWEALTH DISTRICT

BROOKE POINT

Coach: Andy Steuart and Shannon Simmons

Last year: Boys—third in district. Girls—eighth in district.

Top returners: Boys—Jessup Mikeal, Forrest Deal. Girls—Mary Flinn.

Top newcomers: Girls—Caroline Wanner

Outlook: It’s the largest team Brooke Point has had in some time, but many of its swimmers are newcomers. Flinn qualified for the state in the 200 free and the 100 back last year.

COLONIAL FORGE

Coach: Georgia Rathje and Megan Smickley

Last year: Boys—sixth in district. Girls—third in district.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Jared Redding, Jr. Brandon Sanders, Jr. Andrew Wineinger. Girls—Sr. Bailie Monahan, Sr. Ciara McTarsney.

Top newcomers: Boys—Fr. Jacob Ball, Sr. Will Luciani. Girls—Fr. Ryli Waisanen, Fr. Kara Wineinger.

Outlook: Both boys and girls teams look deep, with strong returners and some new talent. The girls team can contend for the district title. Monahan is an elite swimmer and has signed with East Carolina.

MASSAPONAX

Coach: Eric Barnaba and Brennan Barnhart

Last year: Boys—fifth in district. Girls—fifth in district.

MOUNTAIN VIEW

Coach: Michele Golles

Last year: Boys—second at district, second in Northwest Region. Girls—seventh at district.

Top returners: Boys—Jr. Daniel Stockner, Sr. Michael Sell, Sr. Michael Slattery, Sr. Mike Johnson, Jr. Michael Faust. Girls—So. Jessica Johnson, Jr. Alex Martinich, Sr. Alyssa Pfannenstein, So. Casey Walker.

Top newcomers: Boys—Ryan Scott, Matt Papandrea. Girls—Megan Clark, Katie Sell, Brianna Stuart.

Outlook: A strong freshman class should boost the girls team. The boys team is smaller this year, but it has a strong group of returners that should keep the Wildcats competitive in the district and region.

NORTH STAFFORD

Coach: Traci Abramson and Laura Cwick

Last year: Boys—fourth in district. Girls—district champions.

Top returners: Boys—Jr. Nolan Faherty, Jr. Austin Lohr, Sr. Kyle Massie, So. Matt Morrison, So. Chris Peele, Sr. Nick Slowik, Sr. Ryan Tolliver, Sr. Derek Young. Girls—So. Keri Bumbarner, Sr. Angela Carandang, Sr. Megan Comer, Jr. Sara Dix, So. Harley Johnson, Jr. Madeline Murray, Jr. Karaline Schmitz, So. Katie Tolliver.

Top newcomers: Boys—Fr. Cameron Brackmann, Fr. Jonathan Fralen, Fr. Logan Ross. Girls—Fr. Marin Faherty, Fr. Tyler Hank, Fr. Payton Hanson.

Outlook: The boys team has added a good group of newcomers to a strong crowd of returners, with the hope of qualifying for the state meet. The defending district champion girls team is transitioning after losing a large class of seniors. They’ll be counting on some new faces this season.

ORANGE

Coach: Ryan Campbell

Last year: Boys—second in Jefferson District, fourth in Region II, fifth at Group AA state meet. Girls—fourth in Jefferson District.

Top returners: Boys—Jr. Alex Montes de Oca, Sr. Justin Barden, Jr. John Marquis, Jr. Ethan Cluff. Girls—Jr. Kristen Cook, So. Larissa Neilan.

Top newcomers: Boys—Jr. Ryan Hoffman

Outlook: It should be an interesting year for the Orange boys team, which has fared well in Group AA. Can they repeat their success against the Commonwealth District? The girls team is rebuilding.

RIVERBEND

Coach: Maggie Dunford

Last year: Boys—seventh in district. Girls—sixth in district.

Top returners: Boys—Jr. Ethan Etter, Jr. Dennis McClure, Sr. Sean McClure, Sr. Christian Riffee, So. Landon Wilcox. Girls—Jr. Kayla Brumbaum, Sr. Hannah Hebertson, So. Elizabeth Schreppler.

Top newcomers: Boys—Jr. Kevin Naples. Girls—Fr. Nicole Muilenburg.

Outlook: The Riverbend girls team added some strong new swimmers this year and looks to improve its district position this year. Brumbaum was last year’s Group AAA state 100 breast champion and The Free Lance–Star’s swimmer of the year. The boys team returned a good group and added some depth, and hopes to climb up to the top three in the Commonwealth.

STAFFORD

Coach: Bernadette Pellichero and Glenn Stordeur

Last year: Boys—seventh in district. Girls—fourth in district, seventh in Northwest Region.

Top returners: Boys—So. Spencer Payne, Sr. Josiah Sehl, So. Chris Vaughn, So. Billy Howell. Girls—Jr. Allie Lloyd, So. Julianne Rogers, So. Haylie Harbin.

Top newcomers: Boys—Fr. Justin Courtney, Fr. Brandon Spence. Girls—Jr. Liz Kleveno, Fr. Rachel Showers, Fr. Maggie Howell, Fr. Karah Sizemore, Fr. Ryan Ulrich.

Outlook: The Indians lost 16 seniors from last year’s team, but there’s been a nice influx of new swimmers, especially for the girls team.

BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT

CHANCELLOR

Coach: lizzi Bambakakis

Last year: Boys—fourth in district. Girls—fourth in district.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Chris Cai, Sr. Hunter Steadman. Girls—Sr. Jo–Ellen Cabrera, Jr. Laura Bradley.

Outlook: The Chargers have 26 swimmers out this winter. Bradley was a solid swimmer last year, but she’s out until January with an injury.

COURTLAND

Coach: Greg Marsh

Last year: Boys—third in district. Girls—second in district.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Daniel Adams, Sr. Brian Funderburke, Jr. Nick Koch, So. Griffin Mahon. Girls—Sr. Claire Hybl, So. Emily Hybl, Sr. Julianna Procaccini, So. Josie Till.

Top newcomers: Boys—Fr. Jonathon Pins. Girls—Fr. Kaitlynn Moore.

Outlook: The Courtland girls team returns a strong squad that was 10–0 in the regular season last year. The boys team was 9–1, and also looks to keep up the pace this winter.

CULPEPER

Coach: David Hodgson

Last year: Boys—seventh in district. Girls—seventh in district.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Adam Jordan, Alex Bassette, Lee Cole. Girls—Kendall Trout, Emily Bricken, Emily Davis, Taylor Young, Emily Dietz.

Top newcomers: Boys—Ross Hedlund, Mason Azais

Outlook: Culpeper has 37 swimmers out for its first-year coach, the most the Devils have had in some time. Azais, a freshman, should turn some heads this year.

EASTERN VIEW

Coach: Adam Hughes

Last year: Boys—sixth in district. Girls—sixth in district.

Top swimmers: Boys—Jr. Jarrett Sites, Fr. Owen van Krimpen. Girls—Fr. Allie Caught, Fr. Kendyl Coley.

Outlook: The team, which in the past has relied heavily on upperclassmen, will consist mainly of promising underclassmen this year. Hughes said he thinks they can give the other teams in the district a run for their money.

JAMES MONROE

Coach: Jordan Filchock

Last year: Boys—third in district. Girls—second in district.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Kyle Hayes, Jr. John Armellino, So. Peter Stoffel, Jr. Ben Camber, Sr. Andy Catron, Jr. Scott Allison. Girls—Sr. Emily Rowland, Sr. Lina Zimmerman.

Top newcomers: Fr. Brad Allison, Fr. Max Glover, Noland Butler, Fr. Nye Lott.

Outlook: Filchock is in his first year as the Jackets’ coach. The boys team has a good group of returners, including all of a state-qualifying relay team.

KING GEORGE

Coach: Debi Bernardes

Last year: Boys—district champions. Girls—district champions.

Top returners: Jr. Brooke Ballenger, Jr. Katie Barnum, Jr. Taylor Brandts, Jr. Kevin Carpenter, So. Jackie Collins, Sr. Tyler Collins, Jr. Jake Cullin, Sr. Shelby Doyle, Jr. Cole Gallamore, So. Justin Halter, Jr. Jamie Herman, Sr. David Hunt, Jr. Matthew Hunt, Jr. Rebecca Liskiewicz, So. Scott Loudin, So. Kenzie Ludwig, So. Chase Manard, Sr. Natalie McGregor, Sr. Leann Miller, So. Kourtney Miller, So. Billy Owen, Sr. Cole Pates–Clift, Sr. Rachael Webb, So. Lucy Shippee, Jr. Rachael Zilic, Sr. WIll Zimmerman.

Outlook: The Foxes lost 23 swimmers to graduation from last year’s two district championship teams. Still, they don’t expect much of a drop-off with their newcomers this year.

SPOTSYLVANIA

Coach: Ron Harold

Last year: Boys—fifth in district. Girls—fifth in district.

Top returners: Boys—Carlos Ramirez, Dennis GIll, Jacob Balgoyen, John Zepeda, Kevin Whelchel, Nick Polansky, Zach Miller. Girls—Maggie Suhling, Fallon Richards, Miranda Roberts, Victoria Reynolds, Sarah Matthews.

Top newcomers: Boys—Eddie Whelan, Collin Buchanan, Christopher Cronin, Sawyer Czarnecki, Nick Wakefield, Mario Mejia, Wyatt Sutherby. Girls—Morganne McManos, April Cain, Catherine Conley.

Outlook: Last year’s fifth-place finish marked a step forward for the Knights, who hope to improve again this season. Suhling was a state-qualifier for the girls team.

OTHER SCHOOLS

FREDERICKSBURG ACADEMY

Coach: Sheila Wimble

Last year: Boys—third in DAC. Girls—third in DAC.

Top returners: Boys—Sr. Graham Schattgen, Sr. Matt O’Donnell, So. Jase Davis, Fr. Charlie Garbutt. Girls—Sr. Mary Rose Hazel, Sr. Margy Gray Johnson, Jr. Kirstie Harry, Fr. Maya Schattgen.

Top newcomers: Boys—Ryan Stanitski, Ryan Reeb. Girls—Allison Hansen, Katy Butler, Colleen Norair.

Outlook: Numbers are a bit thin for the boys team, but there are some quality swimmers. The girls team should be strong again, and should compete to finish in the top half of the DAC.

FREDERICKSBURG CHRISTIAN

Coach: Bob Pleban

Last year: Boys—fifth in DAC. Girls—second in DAC.

Top returners: Boys—Seth Andrews, Garret Ross, David Harrington, Taylor Hall, Nathan Brown. Girls—Courtney Jones, Rachel Rutherford, Kelly Rivera, Mary Katherine Pressley, Tessa Pleban.

Top newcomers: Boys—Andrew Brown. Girls—Gracie Patterson.

Outlook: The Eagles’ boys team lost three of its top seniors from last season, but they still hope to improve at the DAC meet. The girls team lost a strong group of seniors, too, but they hope to maintain their position in the conference.
