Prep Roundup: Chargers advance to region field hockey semifinals

FIELD HOCKEY

CHANCELLOR 4, LAFAYETTE 0

Chloe Fernandez scored two first-half goals and Chancellor earned a 4–0 win against visiting Lafayette in the Region I field hockey quarterfinals yesterday.

Erin Bartley notched a goal and an assist, Kate Colley had a goal and Greer Trainham an assist for the Chargers (18–1).

Goalie Elaine Wood made five saves for Chancellor, which hosts Grafton in the region semifinals tomorrow.

GRAFTON 2, JAMES MONROE 1 (OT)

Grafton scored midway through the first overtime to earn hard-fought win over visiting James Monroe in the Region I quarterfinals.

Grafton opened the scoring five minutes into the game on a deflected goal, but the Yellow Jackets’ Miranda Rigg tucked home a rebound with seven minutes left in regulation to tie the game.

JM goalie Cristy Baer—who finished with 19 saves—made a big save on a Clippers’ breakaway just before the game-winner.

Savannah Snead had a defensive save for the Jackets, who finished 14–4.

BRUTON 3, COURTLAND 2

Courtland scored with five minutes to play to get within one goal of visiting Bruton, but the visiting Panthers hung on for a Region I quarterfinal win.

Katie Quinn and Gabriela Miranda scored for the Cougars who finished 11–7.

TABB 10, EASTERN VIEW 0

The Tigers cruised to a win over visiting Eastern View in a Region I quarterfinal yesterday. The Cyclones finished with a 9–8–1 record.

ALL-BATTLEFIELD DISTRICT

Chancellor’s Chelsea Galera, the Battlefield District’s leading scorer with 25 goals, was named player of the year by the district’s coaches.

Six other players from the Chargers’ district championship squad were named to the 17-player first team: defenders Kelly Rivera and Taylor Feducia; midfielders Chloe Fernandez, Greer Trainham and Kathryn Hull; and forward Erin Bartley.

King George’s Diana Blair-Baughman was named coach of the year by her peers.

LANCASTER 41, COLONIAL BEACH 26

With the game tied 26–26 with about a minute, Lancaster returned an interception for a score and then grabbed another on the visiting Drifters’ ensuing possession to seal the Northern Neck District win.

Colonial Beach falls to 3–6 overall, 1–3 in the district, and visits Washington & Lee to close out the regular season on Friday.
