High School Volleyball Notepad: District tournaments have familiar feel
District volleyball tournaments will heat up tonight, and plenty of the usual suspects have emerged as title contenders.
In the Commonwealth, top-seeded North Stafford will play host to surging Albemarle in one semifinal.
The Wolverines were coasting through a perfect district season before they were upended by Colonial Forge two weeks ago. Still, North Stafford, which swept Stafford in a quarterfinal, remains the favorite.
Albemarle, a perennial district power, seemed to be in the midst of a down year. But then the Patriots closed the regular season with a win against Colonial Forge, and in a quarterfinal, they defeated Massaponax, 3–1.
In the other semifinal, Riverbend will visit Colonial Forge, the defending champion.
The Bears took a 3–0 win over Mountain View in their quarterfinal, and with high expectations surrounding the other three semifinalists, they could sneak in and pull off an upset.
Colonial Forge was surging toward the finish line before losing to Albemarle last week. The Eagles defeated Brooke Point in a quarterfinal, 3–0.
In the Battlefield District, the bracket is lined up for another Courtland vs. Chancellor showdown in the title game. There are no quarterfinals in the Battlefield, so play begins in the semifinals.
Top-seeded Chancellor will play host to fourth-seeded Culpeper in one match, and Courtland will face Spotsylvania in the other. Both will be held at Chancellor tonight.
On Oct. 18, Chancellor completed the regular-season sweep of Courtland with a 3–0 win.
